I think the box being "way too big" as you put it could have quite an affect on the sub. Could be wrong, but im pretty sure you could fuk it up pretty easily in a box too big, or a shitty design. Most likely its just too big. Id take it out and have a look at the sub.you think the box damages subs?
Too large of a box is like using a ported box, but running the speaker below the port frequency. The speaker isn't being damped properly and starts acting as if it's in free air....but it still pounds... it still beats, just when you turn it up and it gets to a high note, it cracks, but still works.
dammit, i wish i would have known that a to big of a box would mess it up....

I'm going to call JL on monday. If they say it's blown, I don't give a shit, I'm turnin up my JL 1000/1 and runnin it 1000 till it blows. That pisses me off.

It took me about 1 month to cook one of these with my JL 1000/1. 1.5 cubes sealed, 15", and it hit hard until I tore it apart. That JL amp is no joke.
