Birch Box Build for 2 SX 12's

Uhmm .... Nicely thought out ..... Eye catching too ..... But um , ever wonder why 99% of all high end speaker builders choose MDF ? It's not the cost , it is the lack of inert resonance of the material. Real wood has it's own resonance frequency which colors the sound .... It has nothing to do with stiffness.
Some guys swear by birch - depends on who you talk to //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

now how did i know a thread for such a sexy box would turn out like this?

Because it's a TCAB thread.

Stuff goes for about $45 a sheet here.I might break down and buy some tomorrow, a sheet of MDF isn't exactly easy to work with on a table saw by yourself.Well, compared to half sheets at least.

Mark, PM me with your current AIM name.

yepOr oak ply ( nicer looking IMO) for the same price

Or $35 if you know people //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
I wanna know people //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm sure wood fluctuates region by region and location by location.

Two problems with ANY kind of hardwood plywood .... If you know how plywood is made , then you know it has LOTS of air pockets between the layers , and they are spaced randomly .... Making it VERY inconsistant.

Also solid wood of ANY variety outside of certain super exotics have soft spots , hard spots , grain switches , pockets , ext , ect ,.... I know , I use to build $5000 rifle stocks .....

Its still stronger, lighter, more water resistant and holds screws better than mdf.

MDF may be more consistent, but that alone doesn't make a better box construction material.

First box that I've seen from you that from an aesthetic standpoint, helps justify the prices I've seen flung around.

But, I'm sure this one's a tad more expensive then the others...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

nice box...I have used birch ply on my ported box for my avalanche 15, and I recently made a sealed box with birch for it. I put fiberglass resin in the box to prevent air leaks. despite the imperfect cuts made...this box is airtight. the box also weighs 20 lbs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

for once something you turned out that looks decent...
and yes thats a compliment

Look for more of the same, btw.

Believe it or not, I sifted through hte BS, figured what the legit complaints were, and adressed them.

It does cost a touch more, but it is also very, very worth it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. MDF glued/screwed is also offered @ a cheaper price, depends on what the end user wants to go with.

lmao yea, thats the best part IMO, this giganto 5.x cube box weighs all of 45lbs.

Weight to some people is a big concern... not everyone wants their dual 12 box to make the car handle like a semi and lose 10mpg.

I agree. If I can keep 50 less lbs in the trunk over an extended period...it is worth paying $46 a sheet for birch to save on gas and to not alter the handling/suspension of my car much. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif my 3.75 cuft poted box weighed all of 35lbs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif not to mention the ease of taking/moving the box around.
