Here's what I'm considering:
There are some nice 2-way passive crossovers that do
distance and off axis correction. The two I'm looking at
are the focal K2P's and the alpine type x's.
Typically with a 2-way active setup, you crossover between
2500 to 3500Hz on a 6.5" and a tweeter. Usually, the 6.5
would or could get a little more power than the tweeter.
Say a 100w mid and 50w tweeter split.
The concern I have is how to correct for off axis and driver
distance in an active setup.
So here is what I'm thinking, most of the soundstage detail
is in the mid to high range, say 1000Hz and up. I want to run
an active crossover at about 700Hz and down to a 6.5 getting
about 50w each. Then on the 700Hz and up run a small dome
mid and a tweeter using one of the 2 passive crossovers with
about 100w each.
Basically here is what I'm considering:
Head unit crossover set to 80Hz Hp on front preout
to
Crossover AudioControl EQT 2-way active set to 700Hz
to:
Low pass section:
Low pass 80Hz-700Hz
to Hifonics series vii vulcan(zed) 50w x 2
to
Peerless 50w 4 ohm 6.5" woofers

$45x2 = $90
High pass section:
High pass 700Hz
to
Sundown 100.2 to
Focal or type x active crossover (say 3800 Hz for focal)
$80 for focal passive:

Focal Mid out to
MB Quart 2" mid 4 ohm 60w each
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=45_234_263&products_id=1085
$64 x 2 $130, but I'd have to find them somewhere or something similar.
They would be placed close to equidistant from the 6.5"
and the tweeter. You could draw a line with the 6.5 near the floor, then
up the door to the mid then to the bottom of the A-pillar the tweets.
Focal tweeter out goes to
Peerless ring tweeter 4 ohm 140w
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=45_229_270_324&products_id=1181
$50 x 2 = $100
total 90+80+130+100 = $500
Or I could just get the darn type x pros I want for $350.
I think writing this down talked me out of it.
