hey ppl, im in debate for a good radar detector. The ones that ive narrowed it down to are the bel 985, the escort passport 8500, and the valentine one. Which one is the best to use?

id go with the valentine. i have a CA & E mag and they did a review of 3 radars and the valentine was highly regarded.

i dont know too much about the valintine but i know the 8500 escort is upgradable and that (from what i read) was never given consideration to flexability...the 8500 is a stout performer as well

the best radar detector you can get is...........not to speed, then you don't have to spend money on a detector, or on a ticket.

That, and the newest squad cars are equipped with laser tech. that your little radar detector is pretty much a useless pile of electrical squabble against.... it'll blip for a brief burst when he nails you, by that time it is too late... I've watched it happen more times than I care to count... yet every time after the cop laughs at the guy with the detector, he just doesn't get it...

If you have a lead foot, I'd suggest learning to set the cruise control and just taking your foot off the gas, that is what helped me...

get a laser defense system, it will shift the laser keeping it from returning back a speed reading to the gun, they wont be able to clock your speed, They are about $300 to $400 and are 90%-95% effective depending on what brand you get

That is not going to solve anything. The police are very good at judging speed. I have no idea what percentage of times they estimate your speed as opposed to actually clocking you, but I can tell you that I have been pulled over twice for speeding, just by judging what the officer told me, I was pretty sure I hadn't been clocked, and both times they were within 1-2 mph of my actual speed. Usually if they clock you, they will tell you I had you on radar at "xx". A radar/laser detector is a big waste of money, if you are worried about a ticket, don't speed.

alright thanks for the input, but i just want to see if anyone was using a radar detector that helped them out or not. I know they aint perfect, but they can provide some info to help you slow down if you don't realize how fast your going(say your keeping up with traffic and your doing 10 over)!!!!

If the traffic around you is speeding and you are keeping up with them at approximately the same speed, there is really nothing the officer can do, he can pull you over and give you a ticket, but you can get it dismissed at court. The reason being is if he didn't pull every one over that was doing the same speed as you, then I believe you can go for discrimination or something like that. I've had friends do that and the judge threw it out. Only way it might not work is if he pulled you over for speeding, and gave you a ticket for something else, then it would be hard to get dismissed.

Yea radar detectors are pretty much a gimmick, makes people think they're get'n what they need...

A large percentage of highway speed is controleld with speed traps, with stop watches... laser cannot avoided unless you can affored the materials used in stealth technology. And in my area, it is legal to pull oversomeone with officer judgment.. Trust me, if you sit in a police car for years and drive around, you get a good idea how fast people are going just by look'n. And the cops can tell if you have a detector because the radar is audible, makes a distincitive sound. Not good if detectors are illegal in ur state.

Where I come from we have whistler and cobra. I already know whistlers sre shi*ty. Is Cobra any good or do I need to travel a little bit to get a radar detector?

don't buy a cobra, they are junk. If you buy any radar detector, make sure its bel(favorite), escort(favorite), or valentine(expensive, but good) who makes one. those three are the number 1 producers of radar detectors and have more performance for their money.
