Excursion is controlled really well until you get below port tuning in a vented enclosure. Xmax can have very little to do with the low frequency extension in that alignment. When excursion isn't as large of a factor, your port tuning, enclosure volume, and other T/S's have more of an impact on low frequency extension.

my friends has 2 12's(shallow mount subs) in his mr2 and it sounds good and gets decently loud

I haven't seen anyone recommend a GZ in a long time. Last I knew it was almost impossible to even buy their products in this country anymore.

X2, it seems only a couple people on this forum run daytons. I would like to see info and reviews on these, well on the 10s and 12s, not really looking into 8s.

I ran the 12" in a 2ft^3 @ 32hz box and it sounded great and got loud as well. I think it's still in the garage somewhere.

i thought about the shallow mounts... but even with their design, you still need a large box for them to be optimal.

I dont see the big appeal of the Dayton 8's. Relatively low xmax, low power handling, rather deep mounting design, no bl optimization or anything that I can see.... Im not seeing anything that makes those speakers stand out from the pack.
