Best 5.1 reciever under $400/retail

I am still debating on a high fidelity DIY stereo setup vs. just buying a new reciever.

after I hear your reviews, I will make a decision.

I sit in a server room with an obscene noise-floor all day, so my listening ability probably isn't up to par with tama's british ear.

Truthfully, silence sounds better than anything else lately. The main reason I'm upgrading from the speakers that were included in the HTIB is that I think they're a little too dullish / flat for music. Might just be me from tuning out the fan noise though.

Except Dark Side of the Moon. >: )

I'm listening to 'Money' from DSOTM right now. My Optical cable and decent speaker wire came in from Monoprice, so I rearranged the room and timealign/eq'd it up. Playing via Dolby EX.

It's an Onkyo 505, btw. Came in the HT-SR800 package. Probably fits the bill per your thread title. The HTIB was 520, but you didn't include speakers in your budget.

Out of the HK AK-147, Yamaha RX-V459, and a Onkyo 605 which would you choose and WHY?!?!?

I am narrowed down to those 3!

If you want the receiver to be able to decode the future audio formats (truehd, dd+ etc) then the 605 is the way to go. I bought mines from amazon recently for 379$ shipped.

I'd pick the 605 just from my experience with my Onkyo and the fact I've never used either of the other two.
