Battery to play with engine off

I want to be able to play my system at tailgate parties, etc. with out leaving my truck running for 2 hours

I was thinking about adding a deep cycle battery with a isolator in the back of my Tahoe...

So,

I went to my local car audio shop, and asked them about adding a secondary battery, so I could play my system for extended periods of time without leaving my truck running. He said, it couldn't be done. Said I'd be luck to get 15-30 min of time, before I'd drain the secondary battery. Said I could add 4 more batteries, and I might get an extra hour of playing...at best!

he proceeded to tell me that they never use isolators when installing a second battery. They always install them in parallel.

I left the car audio shop feeling that is would be pointless to add the extra expense and hassel of adding an additional battery for 30 min. of playing. I'd just have to keep the truck running????//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Does this information seem accurate?

"B"

i played my system today for 40 minutes at reasonable levels (110 or 120-ish?), and tested the battery afterwards... if i remember correctly the battery was at 12.51v & ~640 CCA...

i've got a large battery //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I can kill my battery with my car off in a matter of seconds lolol.
wow. you may need an upgrade:laugh: i am pulling ridiculous amps with 1600+ watts out of 2 class A/B amps and i can even last a few minutes at full volume. i need an upgrade too as a matter of fact, but seconds?

i have two sx 12s and two memphis 1000ds and two yellow tops and i leavemy system running for hours + at like 75% volume all th time and have never had a dead battery yet... but getting an isolator will definitely be a good idea if you want to play it till the battery dies...

i've gotta get a yelow top. i killed a brand new sears die hard in 15 minutes. i'll probably get 2 at some point, but i rarely bump it parked more than 20 minutes or so.

^wow.

i've got a walmart everstart maxx 24FS (700cca), and a very comperable setup, and it cranked up just fine after 40 minutes of moderate bangin (it only dropped to 12.5v)...

exactly how hard were running your system??

the precision power seems to kill batteries like nothin'. i did have the same setup with a viper d1200.1 and could bump for 45 minutes or so. now with the ppi it just kills it.

cca dont mean too much for what he is doing. you want something with a greater capacity. 120+ aH

^agreed, CCA is more closely related to ESR than anything, but it does give a general idea of the overall strength of the battery, especially when one keeps in mind that i'm talking about a regular, non-deep cycle, flooded acid battery rather than a tightly packed AGM.

edit: how are you liking the MSync's?
