Battery Blew Up!

umm what would cause the factory battery in a 00' nissan xterra blow up? i was standing up stairs(garage under my room) and i heard a loud pop, I went into the garage and she said she went to start it and it wouldnt start just something on the car blew up. So i opened the hood and i see the + terminal cover is popped up and battery acid is on top of the battery, wtf would cause this to happen? everything on the car is stock.

Could be a failure of the voltage regulator...if the voltage wasn't controlled, there could have been a thermal failure, where the charging current would keep increasing, raising the cell's temperature along with it, until it blew.

This also happened on my sisters 98 Nissan Maxima SE. Went to start it and POW!!. Turned out that there wasn't enough water in the battery, due to it not being properly maintained. Dunno though that's what I was told anyhow. Put in a new battery and all was well.

Yea the possibilitys are endless but generally its an internal plate failure of some sort or possibly something unfuse shorting otherwise its fairly cut and dry if the vehicle wasnt running. But usually you'll find one of the plates inside shorted.

Not enough hood clearance??

And...

Could be a bad battery or alternator. I wouldn't put a new battery in there until the alternator was checked.
how would the alt come in play if the car was off and the alt was not charging the battery? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

he said the "she went to start it and it wouldnt start up"

but she was in the car and prolly didnt even know what happened. sounds like a plate shorted, or some kind of voltage problem with the starter\alternator.

definatly get it checked out.

and if the terminals grounded to eachother, that battery would have exploded and the hood would have popped off (most likely)

There's obviously something wrong with the battery. Question is: what and how did it happen? Maybe the alt is overcharging it? And it became unstable when trying to start the car?
