BATTERIES. Why do so many people add them?

go out side unhook your battery with your car running and see how long you can play your system. Your alt is to float your batts NOT to supply power to your amps. That is a sure fire way to kill an alt.

On 3k rms stock alt one batt I dipped into mid 11s. Added two more batts and didn't go below low to mid 13s so batts work but I do see 5+ as overkill
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

I've actually done that when testing my alt. It worked pretty good although I didnt go full tilt (never do in my neighborhood let alone my driveway)

13's? I am running a single regular lead battery from O'riellys on my stock 125 amp alt and I never drop under 13.8 even at idle (running 2400krms @1ohm)
I'm running 2400kwrms @ 1 ohm on a stock batt and stock alt (alt is from 1999)

yea...i see the typo. Not gonna edit it though.

you will drop, then your alt will fight to keep up. your idle will drop making your voltage drop even more.

batteries are needed more then a HO alt is.

I sense a little sarcasm in this comment.
Nope, it aint no AGM xxxtreeme 170000 fast discharge pro audio battery

But, I've never once had it die on me and I wang hard all day. Rests around 12.4 all day

Thus, coming to my point, why add another unless I want to wang with my car turned off?
I was referring to the fact that you stated that you run 2400 thousand watts rms. Would take quite a battery for that.

lol oh and op just because your alt is 80 amps or whatever doesnt mean your amp cant draw more than 80 amps. thats where bats come in. also neither are constant. amp doesnt constantly draw the same current and your alt doesnt produce the same current constantly. adding bats adds stability but there are those that over kill. i find it hard to believe you could run 2500rms+ at full tilt with stock alt and bat with car at idle for very long without noticing draw on your electrical.

Batteries have the ability to produce hundreds of amps almost instantaneously, however they only come into play when the system voltage drops to their resting voltage. Alternators only produce current based on the load and there is a delay in that production, batteries help make up the difference (because they can supply current faster) and also help stiffen the voltage if the alternator is taxed past it's load (and thus the voltage drops). However running a large system on a small alternator and many batteries is very taxing on the alternator and eventually WILL cause it to fail.

So if I'm gonna be running around roughly 2200w RMS on my stock 135 alt and Optima Yellowtop are you guys saying I really do not have to invest in an expensive HO alt when a battery or 2 in the back will be fine? I dont know what batts you guys are buying but my Yellowtop was $225 and I see if I have to buy another one or 2 of those to keep my electrical solid I might as well just invest in the 320 amp alt for $500 I was looking at.

I was in 12's with 1200rms on stock battery and lights dimming out the wahzoo in my Focus. (One of the many different systems in it.)

I added a bettery battery up front, Red top starter and a Powermaster in the back, forget # and I was in mid 13's full tilt and no more dimming. No big 3 done either.

So I think it does help, but agree 3-5 is overkill on smaller systems.

This thread is full of so many newbs that have no idea about anything, it makes me laugh

so is my 10-15 100ah batts a waste of money lol.

Not everyone can fit a 300 amp alt on there car. Just because you have a big alt does not always mean you are going to be able to keep your voltage up. Batteries are your back up for when your drawing more current than what your alternator can keep up. 2400rms is really not even that much, because after your box rise and voltage drop you might be seeing about 1000rms or so thats why you dont see to much of a voltage drop

Like i said..80 amps is 80 amps.. Even if you have 10 batteries, your only producing 80 amps of current..

Am I correct?

Not trying to start ****, I'm honestly trying to learn.
The 80 amps is what the alt can discharge on it's own. Once the voltage gets to the level where the batts start to help out, then they have their own discharge rate on top of the 80amp alt.
