Back in the Game, it's been YEARS! What's out there now???

Interesting, I'll look into it. I figured there would be subs out there I never even have heard about. Thanks!

Yeah people said the subs I used to have were very nice during the "peak" of internet brands. Does that mean there's not a lot out there anymore due to the economy and all that?

Thanks for the advice. I'm really looking for some bad *** subs for ported enclosure for some nice SQL. I know Image Dynamics made the IDQ version 3 subs, and were epic SQ for sealed, but how are they ported? I also hear ID is no longer. Too bad because I used to have their 6.5in Chameleon components a while back and they were my favorite comps to this day, even over my current morels.
Yeah. You shouldn't have sold the TC stuff LOL. As has been mentioned there's still TC stuff (audiopulse) on partsexpress.com and plenty used on the forums. Fi never impressed me with anything I've heard or tested (putting on flame suit).

As has been mentioned Adire is gone and even the clones are not available new anymore (but are still pretty hard to beat).

I think the problem isn't so much the economy but that unless someone comes along to totally change the paradigm of how a conventional loudspeaker works, there's really not much left for technological advancement. TC sounds and Adire are about the last 2 companies that really made any great advances in technology so the stuff you've already heard is pretty much the cutting edge (this isn't computers where the tech is obsolete in 3 months).

The SMD woofer (and a few others) have some sort of dual gap design which is different and probably serves a purpose (haven't looked much into them), but they are premium priced and I suspect if they were that much better than XBL^2 or LMS technology the design would be far more prevalent.

The up and coming and strongest internet brands at the moment are mostly focused on very modestly priced daily driver type subs. Pretty much all off-the-shelf parts, no new or low distortion technology, but just a lot of bang for the buck... Solid performance, high power handling, and affordability seems to be what the majority of the market demands.

For your application, single Audiopulse Epic (new incarnation of TC-3000) 15 would handle 1000W forever and they do well in small-ish ported alignment.

I was going to say this as well. If I remember correctly, the recommend smaller enclosures for these. I've never owned any of them, but I'd love to try them out.
I love them, had a pair a while ago. They spank the lows and i love the fact they do so well in such small enclosures. I would say sa-12s or obsidian audio 12s

So I've narrows the choices down to these three subs... I will be getting a pair of 12's, ported, for all choices. Price does matter, so if I can save some the better, but if not, oh well... lol

1) 12' SSA Dcons

2) Skar VVX-12

3) Sundown SA-12'

Now, out of these three, given proper airspace, tuned to around 32hz, off 500w rms EACH, which would be the best for my needs to you think? These are new to me. Or will all be just perfect and it's just up to me?

Dcons might not be what your looking for bass wise since they are the entry level driver, the skars are good for hitting lows super well and in my choice i would go with the sa12's they work the best in small space and they hit every note right on key every time. I personally believe they are the best entry drivers made for that exact reason. They are amazing subs for the price, if i were you i would go with the sa12s, and maybe a little stronger amp to. 1200-1400 rms

Ok I'll look into this. After some further research on my part this is what my gut feeling was telling me at the moment. It's exciting to get back in the game here! I've head nothing but good reviews thus far on the Sundowns.

Small ported SQ box in an SUV will be very very difficult to do.

First off, subs really don't care what kind of ported box they're in. You tune the port to the enclosure's volume and not what subwoofer you'll be putting in it. Some companies may recommend one thing or another; it really doesn't matter.

Here's what matters; port velocity. Smaller boxes need much longer ports and you can get into issues with the ports making noise do to friction. You usually won't hear this in a trunk; you'll hate it in a hatch/SUV. Larger ported boxes need shorter ports and don't suffer as much from port noise. For SQ, you want a vented box on the larger side.

What I'd recommend is only 1 12" subwoofer if space is the main concern. It'll still have a lot of output but it won't take up as much space. It'll probably have more output than a pair of sealed 12's anyway.

Figure out what you want to do with your hatch area as far as a box goes before you spend $600 on a pair of 12's that might need a HUGE box to minimize port noise and sound terrible when they're sealed.

Yeah I totally understand, I mean, I have designed a few enclosures before and understand how it works, I was just seeing what subs were out there that didn't REQUIRE some large enclosure. I mean, it is a SUV with a large hatch, I just don't want to take ALL the space up because, to me, thats ridiculous. If it takes half the space, that's ok for my daily driving and cargo for the car. If I go camping, etc and need all the space, I can easily remove the enclosure and gain 100 percent of my space back for when I need it.

So considering I go with two Sundowns, 12s, ported, what size enclosure am I looking at around here? I need to take some measurements I believe...
