i'm going to take my 2001 passat in to have my monsoon stereo system replaced with an alpine deck, they told me they MIGHT be able to "turn the amplifier on" but if they cant its going to cost an extra $150. does anyone know in advance if this will work?

all you have to do is run speaker wire from the head unit directly to the speakers. this is la process called bypassing the monsoon amp.

i would suggest getting an aftermarket amp though for your speakers. will sound much better

No, that's called making more work for yourself than is necessary. I usually bypass amps by unplugging both harness' from the stock amp, figuring out which wires are which, and splicing away. However, on this car, if the amp had to be bypassed, your factory tweeters would no longer work since the monsoon amp is also the crossover.

But regardless, it will work fine. As long as the blue/white wire on the vw harness is connected to a switched source you're golden.
