Applying sound deadener to factory deadener ok?

I am working on deadening the hatch of my mustang. There is some sort of hard, cardboard type sound deadening on part of the floor. Should i peel it off and scrub the crap outta the metal or just clean it up good and stick the sounddeadening to it?

guys this stuff won't come up at ALL! i put a few pieces on the stuff and prepped and cleaned it with paint thinner. We'll see what happens before i cover all of it with deadener.

Well, honestly, why take it out? It's already there, it will adhere fine to the factory stuff, and you will deaden it more. Don't waste your time. That factory shit is stuck really well. Its fine.
