if water gets in your distributor it can cause the engine to act like its seizing or has bad oil pressure, and if water gets in your intake it will hydro lock your engine (if it's running)
i have experience with the distributor problem and i have several friends who lost their 300zx's and s200's when we had some heavy rain fall here in texas....it's not a terrible idea to want to show off what you have (that's a semi-relative statement) but it is good if you can have it on when daily drivin'.
