I see several computers use up 16GB of RAM, so why couldn't he use all 8Gb?I'm pretty sure XP's cap is 2, but maybe you're right about the 3... I know that the cap on vista is 4 though, so even then you STILL couldn't use all 8

Well, you can get Windows XP Professional 64-bit or Windows Server 2003 which will support more than 3.xx GB of RAM, but you're still left w/ an OS that wasn't designed for multi-core CPUs, leaves 90% of your RAM idling, and has generally inferior 1st-party and 3rd-party support for software and hardware alike.I have owned several Acer computers, never had any problems with them. Have you ever personally used one. Answer that question with the TRUTH.
I don't believe you can because of the 3Gb cap on it.

Acer is prolly shit for drivers for xp alsoWell, you can get Windows XP Professional 64-bit or Windows Server 2003 which will support more than 3.xx GB of RAM, but you're still left w/ an OS that wasn't designed for multi-core CPUs, leaves 90% of your RAM idling, and has generally inferior 1st-party and 3rd-party support for software and hardware alike.
As for Acer, they're usually okay ... My only complaint is the cheap motherboards and the amount of crapware they load on.
I have used both Acer and Emachines, and never had a problem with any. I just bought a USED Emachines, and it runs great. Even after Gateway bought out Emachines, they have been a solid product for budget computers.I would never buy one....so no, I haven't owned one. But I have worked on THOUSANDS of them in the last 15 years. They rank right up there with E-machines as far as failure rate goes. Very poor quality.
The cap on Vista Home Premium 64-bit is 16 GB ... 64-bit versions of Business and Ultimate editions extend this to 128 GB ...I'm pretty sure XP's cap is 2, but maybe you're right about the 3... I know that the cap on vista is 4 though, so even then you STILL couldn't use all 8

Here's the info on XP pro off of Microsoft's website - "Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 Memory Support. The maximum amount of memory that can be supported on Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 is also 4 GB. However, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition supports 32 GB of physical RAM and Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition supports 64 GB of physical RAM using the PAE feature."I'm pretty sure XP's cap is 2, but maybe you're right about the 3... But that is not the norm. Watch out for leaking caps on both the emachines and acers.....usually the first thing to fail.I have used both Acer and Emachines, and never had a problem with any.
