any electrical engineers out there?

**** im getting ****ing jipped. 8 free is better than nothing, but free fully would be even better! I cant decide what to do, leaning towards pharmacist, but the crazy student loans is keeping me away.

Man if you work at our university (University of Cincinnati), you and your direct family get free tuition...

My mom works at Purdue Calumet (in Hammond IN) and I get a staff dependent remission. It's like getting a 40% discount on tuition. It's not the best, but it's better than nothing.

any free tuition is better than nothing. i enjoy my life alot right now. pay everything perfectly fine, and barely any debt at all. i just want some education and wouldnt mind some more money. up for some more good answers.

any ideas or discussion on student loans, whether theyre worth it or not? i mean i know thats up to the person using them, but are they easy to get and work with?

Student loans are given out like candy, but remember that they are eventually going to be paid back. When I went to UNC I had to take out student loans for the first 2 years and realised I didn't want that amount of debt. It's up to you, but I would shoot more twords a scholarship/grant.

yea ive been reading about those as well and have had some suggestions from friends and have to follow up on some when i figure out exactly what it is i want to do.

Well, you're financially independent, so you may get some grants based on your income. Also you'll more than likely get some subsidized and unsubsidized loans from the government, unlike grants you have to pay these back, but they are lower interest than getting a private loan from a bank. The subsidized loans, the government pays the interest for you while you are an active student, the unsubsidized loans... interest accrues while you are a student.

This year I had the option of accepting up to $15,900 dollars in financial aid from the government. $3,500 was a grant, $5400 was a subsidized loan, and $7,000 was an unsubsidized loan.

These numbers are based on your income tax returns and such. Just some numbers to give you an idea.

I have went to school have a bs in ee and work as a controls eng doing robot, plc, scada, and HMI programing got out of school at 40k 8 years now and I am at 75k

If i had to do it again I would of went to school for something else

if you are a ee you will live in a hotel all the time

noah, that is some good information. where can you read more in depth on subsidized and unsubsidized loans? through a local bank or through your school?

also, fatboyracing-some jobs say you travel 20-50% of the time, some claim 0% of the time, can you go more in depth on this?

I guess it depends on the job you do and the company you work for I work for a company that has 1800 locations world wide and 150000 employees

(Johnson Controls)

Most of our plants are to small (95%) to have a ee at the plant full time so we travel to them I am on the road 80% when I hired they said 25%

The last company I worked for was the same

Those numbers are just statistical averages, and probably meaningless, as each job is different and changes over time.

Again, I've been working in "engineering" for 24 years, and we've had many years in a row where I never left the office, and then over the last 3 I've travelled to a number of states many times. And, it seems all this travelling is winding down now, with the economy slow-down. You do what the current jobs require.

Re financial aid/ loans that must be paid back: Be careful!! You better really need it, and be very sure you know how d@mn hard it is to pay back money.

If you've been listening to Dave Ramsey, Suze Orman, etc. the last few years, I'm pretty sure they say taxes and student loans are the two debts that can't be eliminated by bankruptcy.

No wonder lenders give them out like candy!! Practically guaranteed money!

what is "google"?

but yea with student loans, it seems like it better be exactly what I want to do, and my student loans may be close to 80k. a pharmacist makes a lot of money and it feels like a job id really really like. the tuition can be paid via financial aid and grants and scholarships, but going to school FT and trying to live id need student loans to just cover living expenses.
