Amp/Sub not working

I just picked up a new Alpine type s sub... it's a dvc 2ohm. My Amp is an older Mtx that is 280w bridged at 4ohm. I wired the sub according to the instructions for a 4ohm load, which my amp is already wired for, and nothing really happens. My amp's red power light is on, and when I turn on my h/u I hear the usual thump for the sub. But when i turn up the volume I hear practically no bass. In addition, the amp is getting really hot. At first I thought it was wired incorrectly, but I double checked and everything looks fine. I'm starting to wonder if I need a new amp... do you guys have any suggestions? thx

Power swithing thump is fairly common depending on the equipment - He's stating he has an older amp.

sdwrx - have You checked Your ground connection? Check that the rca's are making full contact, make sure there is no short ground @ the amp, etc... etc...

I would automatically assume that the sub is wired at a resistance that is too low for the amp, but you said you checked that. As stated above, check all the other wires - power, ground, RCA's. If there's no problem with the wires, then there has to be something wrong with your amp.
