Amp Protect Myster

Newbie here, would appreciate a point in the right direction.

Just reinstalled a whole system I've had sitting on a shelf for a few years, now the sub amp is acting up.

Hifonics Brutus 1800D mono amp is going into protect only when the RCA's are plugged in. Fine, try RCAs from my front speakers. Protect mode. Fine. Try an RCA->3.5mm plugged into my phone. No protect mode and it works. No RCAs plugged in, no protect mode.

At this point I have the speaker wires disconnected, verified 12v (11.8) on the 0 gauge power wire, re-ran the 4 gauge ground wire to a very clean grounding location, and have the gain turned all the way down.

What is going on here?

also, I'm sure unrelated to your issue, but if you have 1/0 power wire, you need 1/0 ground, running 4 AWG will cause a severe bottleneck on the electrical flow and rob you from proper performance

I concur. One side gets a beefy 1.0 and the earth wire gets left out....amp ain't gonna like that.

Good point GP!!

We literally play with electrical non stop and not only find the limits but try to find the end of gains, while before and after metering everything.

Electrical is our specialty. In the 12v world you battle resistance over lengths of wire under an amperage load, you'd be surprised what it takes to stop getting gains simply through wiring, there is almost no end.

From big league SPL competitors I talk with people generally run out of space/budget for cable before they stop gaining.

OP, your problem sounds unusual but by process of elimination the issue must be in your source unit or RCAs.

Lol! You said you were gonna start using that. Guess you weren't joking. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
