ok so the problem is i have a mmats d1400.05 and i can turn the volume almost all the way up as long as i keep the gain half way down. but if i turn the gain more than that and turn the volume up over a 1/4 of the way it goes into protect mode when the bass hits. its wired to half ohm and i have the electrical to keep it up. so im not sure what to do any advice is appreciated.

Set the DMM to AC mode...you cannot set the gains with it in DC mode.

Disconnect the speakers from the amp and if you have one, use a 50Hz test tone CD...if not, pick your music that has some bass in it. Red probe from DMM on one speaker out (+), black probe from DMM on the other speaker out (-) (speaker outs on the amp) and then start cranking the tunes to the highest volume you would normally listen and note the highest voltage recorded.

This is tougher to do with regular music as the voltage is really going to jump around. That's why a test tone is best. It is constant. Check your manual and they should tell you what the max voltage is.
