Amp noise...

Had an amp installed by a local shop, loud whine over the speakers, the amp is installed just above the battery (in the back of the car), if you move the amp about 2ft away from the battery, the whine goes down in volume to the point where you have to listen for it, to notice it... also, this is without the RCA's connected.... a friend of mine said it's probably because the amps ground wire is connected to the chasis at the same point the battery is connected.... opinions? Oh, and the amp is too big to fit anywhere else in the car...
