Amp & Subs - RMS

Hey guys,

I'm a nubie here, and I'm putting in a new system in a '70 K5 Blazer. It consists of a Blaupunkt Casablanca HU, 2 Blaupunkt 6x9's, a component setup up front, (probably Kenwood 5 1/4" w/tweeters) and 2 Polk GNX10's. To let you guys know, I chose this because I am a casual listener, not looking for something that will blow the doors off, just something that sounds nice and doesn't cost a lot of money. I can always upgrade in the future. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Anyways, the question:

The GNX10's are ratted at 175W RMS, and I was thinking of getting a Lanzar Vibe228 (2x150W.) As with any brand, there are people who will tell you that this or that is a POS. I've heard some good things about Lanzars, for driving small stuff, and I think I'll give it a try. I'm not driving 15's!. I will have each sub on its own channel. Since the subs take 175W RMS, and the Vibe puts out 150W, would it be best to go with the 150Wx2 amp, or go with a 200Wx2 amp? I just don't want to overdo it on the subs. I am leaning towards the 150Wx2 amp because I can (and probably will) upgrade sometime in the future when I know more about this stuff and have more money.

Thanks a lot for your input...

Hey there,

I have (2) 175W subs, so that JBL won't drive them at 150Wx1. So back to my question, would you give the subs 150W or 200W per sub? Because the 2 channel amps I've seen are either 150W or 200W per channel.

I think you've done pretty well so far.

Lanzar is anything but a POS company. Like any successful corporation Sound Around (owner of Lanzar) builds a wide range of products from low-end budget stuff to some of the best products on the market. The amp you mentioned is one of their lower end products, but I think it might be just what you need. You need to realize though that the reason that particular amp is so affordable is because it won't put out the power it claims -- that's just how low cost amps work. So if you want to stick with that series I think you should go with something a little bigger, and your subs will thank you for it.

Actually the Jbl 300.1 is a great recommendation. Yes, it is only 150 watts at 4 ohms, but with a pair of subs you can wire them in paralell which will put a 2 ohm load on the amp and give you 150 (actual) watts per sub. It would be an ideal amp for your application, for both power and price.

My only other suggestion would be for you to consider a small amp for your front speakers for your first upgrade. It would really help balance your fronts with the lows you'll be getting from your subs.

I don't think "SQ" and "sub amp" are terms that go together very well. When we're talking bass, SQ comes from a good enclosure and a lot of power. That's just one guy's opinion though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Ok thanks! I've already got a Lightning Audio S.250 amp (75Wx2) that can drive the components. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif If I wire the subs in 2 Ohms and run them with the JBL, wouldn't the amp get hot? The reason I was going to go with a 2 channel is that it would run cooler. I was also looking at the Lanzar Vibe238 (200Wx2) since you said that they are a little underpowered from what the label says. I am trying to buy everything from the same place (onlinecarstereo.com) and they don't have JBL.

The JBL won't get hot. It's actually designed to run best at 1 or 2 ohms, and do it efficiently.

You should check out this site. I think they have all the brands you mentioned. I've ordered from them more than once, and I've always been very satisfied. Plus, if you find a site with better prices and e-mail it to them they'll almost always match it.
