Am I out of line here?

i'll leave names out of this... so I was talking to a guy selling a sub. he is brand new to the forums, and I asked him if he would ship first since he had no refs and he was new. He responed saying that he knew one guy on here personally (this member doesn't have a high post count, but has been here for a while). Honestly, I didn't even look the guy up until he PMed me. I told the seller that the only way I wanted to work this deal was him ship first, otherwise I was going to pass on it. I have more than enough refs for him to trust me. But that was the terms. If he doesn't want to sell it that way, hey I missed out on a good deal.

Today I got a PM from his friend saying... (clips)

"To call your offer inappropriate would be a gross understatement IMO. I have plenty of references here too and would NEVER have the gumption to request an item sent to me with no payment, that is absolutely ridiculous."

"I'm sure your honest and that the deal would have went through fine, but I just had to state that behavior like that is exactly why people new to this hobby or forum in general will be put off."

"It's obviously up to him whether or not he accepts your offer, but i know one thing for sure, I wouldn't buy a **** thing from you."

Am I totally out of line? I wasn't threatening the dude. this is how I ended my last PM "if you want to sell it, thats the way i'll buy it. otherwise, good luck with the sale." No pressure for him to take me up on my offer...

Although I think the entire idea of "refs" as it's used here is a little silly.

I agree refs are what they are... but I have bought, sold, and traded with 21 different members. that should count for something.

I think refs are good, but the main thing i look for when i buy something from someone is how smart they are. I usually go thro a few (100's) of posts by the person and see if they know what they are doing with their equipment. Nothing like buying an amp from someone whose been running it at like .35ohms for a year. Cuse u can't really get references without selling/buying something in the first place.

It's a sticky situation like that. If the guy had e-bay refs, I could see his side. I do think it's kinda crazy the other friend came out swinging on you though. I would think he would see your side too.

I worked out something with bdubs767 here where I paid half before, and half later. I was in a little bit of a bind with my financials though and had nothing to do with trust. Just tossing that out there. Maybe you two could work out something like that.

Maybe my corner of the internet is weird, but in my numerous other forums, I have never really heard of the "ship first" mentality. I mean, I have gotten stuff from people who are ON the forums, but whom I know OUTSIDE of the forums, and paid them later, but I have never even seen the idea of "ship before payment" until I joined CA.

When I say that I am on other forums, I don't mean to imply that I run all over the internet on forums, but on forums for my last 3-4 different vehicles (some with multiple forums), I have not seen that practice.
