Am I Getting Ripped Off???? Please Help!!!!

Ok, I have a PPi 2125 Amp, & 2 Cerwin Vega 12" Speakers. My amp is 500 watts, & my Speakers are 400 watts apiece. I had a car audio company hook this up for me. They charged me 435.00 just for the hook up, I had all of my own stuff. Now my system keeps cutting on & off, I took it back, & they told me that I blew my speakers & that Cerwin Vega speakers are some of worst speakers that I could have bought. That they are only 75 watt speakers. Now They are trying to sell me some of their speakers (Pryamid). I came home & checked my cerwin vega manual & it says that these speakers are 400 WATT speakers. Now when my system comes back on, it sounds great, It just wont stay on long, they dont sound like blown speakers, I checked my amps manual, & checked to see if it was going into protection, & it is NOT it is staying on but no sound from the speakers. PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS SOUNDS RIGHT TO you!! I KICKED OUT SOME SERIOUS FUNDS TO GET THIS SYSTEM!!!! I DONT WANT TO GET RIPPED OFF!! I dont know what to do. yeah your being ripped off...... it shouldnt cost 435 just to hook up a amp and 2 12s unless they built a box. did you buy a box or did they build one? dont buy prymids your cerwinvega is much better then that flea market speaker...... what type of vega do you have? just your subs go off? if its not going into protection i dont know......... maybe someone with more knownledge will reply

Sounds to me like the amp is going into protection. That's usually caused by the speakers presenting an ohm load that's below the amp's capabilities. Another cause is simply overheating. Make sure your amp is getting enough air to keep itself cool. If the subs were blown, it wouldn't keep coming on and turning off, and it wouldn't sound very good when they did play. Try pushing on the center of the cone of your subs. If they make a scratchy sound when you push on them, they're blown.

Don't buy pyramid. It's garbage. Even the low-end vega's are way better than the best pyramid sub made. Take your car to a different shop and tell them there's a problem with your amp shutting down. Hopefully they'll be more knowledgable than the yay-hoo's you're taking it to now.

no way man you just spent 435 bucks down there. keep going back until they fix it. don't buy pyramid. tell them to explain it to you what is wrong. don't just listen to them, make sure you understand whats going on.

How old are the vega's? are they brand new?

It could also be that your factory alternator isn't able to support the stereo system. THis happened to me once, but I owned a 74 vw bug. It's probably what the other guys stated. Going into protect mode from overheating or trying to run at 2 ohms when the amp isn't stable at 2 ohms.

I took it to another audio shop & they said that the speakers are blown! So I took it back to the people that hooked it up for me & asked him to show me & tell me How these speakers were blown. They were brand new cerwin vega vegas 12. He told me that the voice coils were not working.When he turned them on no sound came from them, but when he pushed them down in the center, they came on. I couldnt tell if they had a scratchy sound or not though. He said that the reason the voice coils stopped working, is because of the heat & that I need speakers with a higher Q-factor. I have no idea what that is. Thankfully, I have a 1 year warranty with Cerwin Vega so they will replace these for free. But now i guess Ill have to sell them & get some competition speakers. I looked on ebay & found some Koiiler 1000 watt subs with dual voice coils, know anything about them? Any suggestions will be greatly apreciated. Thanks Again And no I had my own box too. DANG! hey did you put those subs in a sealed or ported box. They should have been put in a ported box.

$435 for a amp hookup, pssh I would take those blown subs and throw them through that shops window. No way they should be in business.

You dont really need competition subs, you can get a pair of Alpine Type R's or Kicker Comp VR's for cheap and get great sound. It all depends on how much you wanna spend. But you have to understand that you cant just take a sub and throw it in a box and all is well. The box has to be designed according to the specs of the sub.

And always questions in this forum before you spend money on your system.

I think my box is a sealed box. It doesnt have any holes or vents in it that I can see. Im looking at the manual for my vegas, & they show a diagram of a mounted speaker with a hole underneath. Is that what you mean by port? Is a Ported box A Vented Speaker box?? Yes, He said that the voice coils were blown, a cd was playing but no sound was coming from the subs, but when he pushed them in the middle they would come on.

Are you a woman?j/w. Cuz if it is i could see why they charged u that much. They prob. didnt think that you knew anything bout it so they would try to get as much out of you as they could.

I have found several VERY informative webpages, & the help here has been GREAT! Im pretty sure that these speakers were put in the wrong type of box (sealed) the manual says the speakers require a PORTED box. That is a vented box right??
