i'm running 1640 watts 1 farad cap - i want a new alternator ..... what should i get - and how do you determine the "amps" (i guess that's the right term)??

also how much do they usually run (price) for the alternator and then for the install??

Originally posted by limitkid7 how much, do they sell for all model cars? what process did you use to figure out that it is that amount of amps
The alternator is 200 ampere rated.. meaning the alternator can provide 200 amperes. You don't calculate that, you read it in the specs for the alternator.

If you are asking how many amperes your amplifiers will draw at 1680 watts, that's a different matter and requires a lot more info about your amps, etc.

just askin i have 1640 watts what kind of alt do i need?

then how much do they usually cost?

is there a certain brand?

how much usually does a place cost to install one?

Different amps draw different current for the same output... so telling you how much you draw at 1640 watts can't be done (not accurately)..

Cost is relative to your car... try mralternator.com, see what they want for various alternators for your car (if they have some).. Otherwise I've not really seen prices on other sites.. I'd guess between ~$150 - ~$300 (for my truck, it's $225 for a 200 amp alternator, which I will now have to get //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif )

For brand, mralternator.com is one I've heard mentioned here.. ohiogenerator.com is another.. there was a 3rd, but I don't recall it at the moment..

Another option might be to have your current alternator re-wound (any alternator shop in your town should be able to do it).. not sure of the cost, you would have to ask the shop..

Install cost depends on your vehicle, etc.. have to call around and ask I guess.. or see if you can do it yourself..

Savant is right, we need to know the amount of current the amps draw, and ohio generator is one of the better alt makers, some of the top competitors have used them for a long time, I mentioned a 200 because it would be plenty and give you some headroom if you add another amp

Depends.. my amps are 'rated' at 2000 RMS (combined at 2 ohm), my speakers 1800 (total).. I doubt I'll be hitting that, but at 1800 RMS it's ~260 aperes at a 50% efficient AB amp.. If he is really running 1600+ RMS he might need over 200 amps (to allow for the vehicle's draw)..

Still, 200 amperes should be fine for normal running I'd think.. most people aren't gonna max their amps on daily driving (not to the tune of 1600+ rms anyway).. I could be wrong //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

(I'm showing ~238 amperes at 50% efficiency on AB amps at 1640 watts.. one at 800, the other at 840... 228 if you can maintain 14.4 volts)

lets just say we'll add up most watts out of these two amps ..... 1680 might be underrated too....

usually you can use these formulas for amp draw and it's fairly accurate...

for class D amps -

RMS watts / 14.4 / .80 , the 14.4 is for volts and the class D amps are generally 80% efficient...

for class AB amps -

RMS watts / 14.4 / .60 , same stuff but they're more like 60% efficient...

1000 / 14.4 / .80 = about 90 amps

680 / 14.4 / .60 = about 80 amps

so unless i'm wrong, those to amps will draw around 170a max, leaving 30a for your car. i think you would be fine with a 200a alternator...

I'm showing 181 total *shrug* but thats a 50% AB
