Alternator Question???

I Dont Know Who To Believe. My Local Alt Shop Says That My Chevy Tahoe 2004 V8 5.3 Computer Can Only Take 180amps Make.he Said Yes A 300 Amp Alt Can Be Made For It But I Will Never See It.yet And Still All Of The Shops On Here Said They Can Make Me One That Will Work With No Problems. Any Advice Pm Me Thanks

ur computer cant burn up......... it only takes as much amperage as it needs. not the whole 300 amps. if everything was seeing 300 amps ur whole stock electrical would fry. ur stock components ( ac, headlights, computer, etc) only use as much amps as they need. dont worry about frying your stock electrical with a bigger alt.

what shop is telling you this? not mg? you can get 180-200 out of that in rewind but you need a custom case like mechman says he uses to get more amps and still have output at idle. I want to see some test on mechmans altys. see what they put out. I know a local place by me that could get you 180- 200

An alt only produces current on demand.So just because its a 300a doesn't mean it's always putting out 300a.As for frying your computer,that has to do with voltage more then amperage.

the alt wont 'put out' amps, but componets will draw from it. I also would advise against getting one rewound. You may have a higher amperage at say 2200 rpm but at idle its gonna **** and you will have major voltage problems which is where most people run inot problems anyways, not cruising down the highway. Mechman gurantees 150amps at IDLE on most if not all of his alternators.

Still wondering why you think you need an alt that big? Running some serious light? An air compressor? What? No stereo is going to need an alt that big unless you're building the setup only for comps and in a class that lets you run the engine during metering.
