AE AV subs?

Provided the spider problem was solved either by sourcing a new one or by applying the phenolic treatment in a new fashion, what would your opinion be of the drivers?
Is the motor system a good one in your opinion?
great driver... i think if you done a stiff progresive raise the Q nad FS up to aroun .35 and 28 in would excell..

I am definitely going to get one of these to test at some point. You would be surprised at the systems that actually use these drivers, but maybe they are just better at home audio and systems for that than car audio. I know this has been a debacle and as of now the AV line doesn't appear all that great, but I have not once heard a bad thing about his TD line. Anyway, hopefully he gets this all resolved to the customers satisfaction.

Are you ready to apologize for telling me I'm a complete idiot then???

Not to start anything but i think the opinions of Sandt38 and kendogg are biased a bit. Wait for different people to chime in.
(Im not denying that there aren't possible problems with these subs, but they have a biased opinion to begin with)

Anyone have any info about this problem other than the BF's reported case?
Read that thread. A 100% failure rate, and people who heard the drivers saying the same thing. Don't take our word, that's why he linked the thread.

Hmm, well hopefully this GIANT batch that john has will be much better performing. Im thinking they will be shipped tomorrow.
I will be doing some extensive testing on the sub, it wont get more than 1000w RMS.

If i notice problems i will just have it reconed immediately by teampsi.
This driver that bassfreak had was just shipped last week. It lasted only 2 or 3 days.

Well im fairly sure my av12-x dual 2 ohm will be shipped tomorrow, as soon as i get it ill put up a nice FAIR review, and in the event that the spider does fail, ill be sure to let everyone know.

The problem with bassfreak is he appeared to be running way too much power to it in a box that was way too big, a recipe for disaster for any woofer on the market.

Well, just to add on. The reason why i bought an AV12 is because my PG RSDC's spider actually had a similar problem. I had it in too big of a box with just a tad too much power and the spider became VERY weak (took 6 months NOT 2 days) and caused too much inward stroke, eventually this meant that i couldn't even play the sub even below nominal power.

So i hope i don't have any problems giving the AV12-x 1000w RMS in a ported box at 30hz.

It never bottomed once in 3.5 tuned to 32 i push it hard near tuing and near tuning only knowing it may have probems bottoming above tuning.. its was loud as hel and controoled but i had to be careful above 60 the first day so i had it BPed from 30-60.. next day I etended the port and hte box dropped to 2.8-2.9 tuned between 31 and 32.. this didn;t correct he lack output above 60 its got more controlled are tuing limiting output... after playing a few song with bass lines from about 55-65 i could tell it just couldn't mechanicaly handle the power.. after a few short hours of play the suspension loosened up more causing anything anove 50 to be uncontroled when a certian amount of excursion was reached, i promise you is was less than 25mm each way, the spider hits that landing at around 30-32mm rearward..

Kenny's was in the suggested box with less then recommended power, and the spider was so soft it felt like it didn't have a suspension from what I heard. Weekz had his in a sealed app with less then recommended power, and it's suspension was so soft it overexcurted and snapped a tinsel. My Brahma 12s after years in a ported enclosure with 700 more watts then recommended power are still ticking.

Keep in mind, bassfreak's was smoked in 2 days... 2 days... This was with a stiffer spider (as per his request). It was a very fair review, as he argued all along about how great the woofer was. There was no bias in his review... I have known him for years, and trust me, he doesn't like to admit I am right.

Kinda ironic, I was just checking Audio Junkies because it was mentioned in this thread and I haven't been to the site in a few weeks and this was the top post, http://audiojunkies.com/blog/1656#continued a system from Salk Sound that uses AE AV drivers.

A couple things. Like i stated in various threads, I assure you the driver works very well in big rooms. It models up beautifully in anechoic rooms. I am not terribly sure I trust the HFE models John puts up, but that is a moot point. The low inductance should provide excellent transients, and it has plenty of motor to kick @ss with low power. I am certain these units you linked provide powered subs and passive top end. I am further certain these might be delivering 500 watts to the subs. 500 watts shouldn't push these units very hard... hopefully not hard enough to wear out the spider. Plus, for $10,000 units, I would hope they are using smaller progressive spiders for better control and greater linearity through excursion. It is not uncommon for high end manufacturers to specify certain parameters or design implementations to suit their needs. For a great example, check out Tidal. Their Ameas (bookshelfs) start at ~$10,000, to their mid line Contriva Diacera starting at $55,000, and their Sunrays are $175,000, with the T1 mains and sub tower systems being a cool quarter million bucks. (I heard the Contriva, not the Diacera, and it was the most amazing speaker i have ever heard in my life... it simply wasn't there). While they use fairly common drivers, they are redesigned specifically for their applications.

There is a huge difference between 500 watts and 1000 watts. There is a huge difference between large room and small cabin (ie. in car) frequency response.

Remember, a speaker can only be as good as the room it is in.

I was talking to John and he said that weekz's woofer didn't die due to overexcursion, it was because one of the tinsel leads was not glued down where it connected to the coil and that's what caused it. This one was a simple mistake that was missed in QA, that was it.
