AE AV subs?

You guys shouldn't be surprised. This industry is a joke.
When I was doing AudioJunkies, I used to ask John for information about his products so we could send him some traffic, and he'd be so excited to do so....and then I wouldn't hear from him for weeks.

I learned a while ago that you must be incredibly resilient if you want to trust anyone in the audio business, because they all end up doing something stupid in the end, either because they were never that good, or because they have no business sense.

I noticed that sandt38 mentioned JL Audio, and this is exactly why I defend that company. Say what you want about their prices, but at least they're not a ****ing joke of a business like most of our online companions.

You were the guy behind AudioJunkies??? ****.

Actually, maybe my number one complaint about John is that he continues to proclaim such incredible capabilities of his drivers but, as far as I have seen, there has not been a single iota of solid data to support these claims. This is not to say that I'm disputing the behaviour of shorting rings (since that is effectively the crux of John's argument), but that I'm disputing the extent to which John has claimed they improve his drivers over others on the market.
Exactly! And even though shorting rings do make a difference, the difference is not that significant IMO. I never saw too much that really inspired me to say "THIS is the driver for me!!!" Of course, it has been years since I was compelled to the point where I had to buy a driver. But the TS really look like a bottom heavy, ported forced, driver in a car. The design is clearly more of a PA design then car audio.

I don't make it a point to defend companies like JL, as I personally don't own any JL products. But I see so much bashing of JL on the forums that is so unjustified (it is really bad on CAF) I find it easy to use their business model as an example in cases like this. They make excellent products, and their CS is exemplary. Sure, they are a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for...

And yeah, a lot of online companies are not exactly reliable, but there are many that are. The reason for my starting that thread was very simple... I wanted to dispel the myth that was the AV. It never looked very promising to me, and when I made my initial observations I was lambasted. But I stuck to my guns and in the end people heard the real stories... a 100% failure rate (No, I seriously didn't predict this), and a bottom heavy driver (I did predict this), with unrealistic HFE claims (I also predicted this)... The bottom line, listen to people who have been around, and can interpret data... Not the guy trying to sell his woofers with a bunch of fancy footwork and line graphs to prove his point.

its not that the driver is bottom heavy, or it lacked hfe/output because of the huge peak.. its simply because of the poor suspensions used.. if you have the correct aligment its not going to be overly peaky(if the suspension wouldn't break down). the specific problem here is the fact that at a certian amount of throw the suspensions larger diameter courragations are alot less compliant and there for alot softer, so as the woofer moved the outter band would start to move and continue to move so much easier that the inner most courragations simply didn't do any work.. it would go from controlled movement to very uncontrolled movement in a matter of 3-4mm both ways... so it would bottom long before it should have with a given input.. if the spider is changed with a 8.5" progresive 2x stiffer it would excell in most car audio applications.. as it stand right now its going to excell in returns..

****, i have an AV-12x that ive been waiting on for 2 months now, do you think it will fail in a 2.75 cuft box at 30hz getting 1000w RMS ?
Quite possibly, yes. I'd demand a refund personally. Were you one of the ones with a failed driver waiting for the last 2-3 months on a warranty recone, or is yours a new order?

I would like to hope that it will be fine and not have any problems, if it does have problems though i will just do as suggested by papermaker and have it RECONED with a 8.5" stiffer spider from fixmyspeaker.

IDK how much that costs, but I hope you have the money ready. Bassfreak (papermaker here apparently) has now blown his driver twice. he bought it used form me the first time, blew it the first day he had it. The new one was ruined by the 2nd day. He knew it had issues when I sold it to him but didn't believe me. Nobody believed these drivers had issues when I piped up, but once people started really listening, and blowing drivers, people have started to listen.

Provided the spider problem was solved either by sourcing a new one or by applying the phenolic treatment in a new fashion, what would your opinion be of the drivers?

Is the motor system a good one in your opinion?

Not to start anything but i think the opinions of Sandt38 and kendogg are biased a bit. Wait for different people to chime in.

(Im not denying that there aren't possible problems with these subs, but they have a biased opinion to begin with)

Anyone have any info about this problem other than the BF's reported case?

There have been other issues with tinsel leads on AV12's. Not sure about 15's, I think I was the only one who received a 15 in the original pre-order from CAF. Keep in mind, there is currently a 100% failure rate on these drivers from users on CAF who purchased them, and I'm sure others are having issues that we don't know about as well.

Hmm, well hopefully this GIANT batch that john has will be much better performing. Im thinking they will be shipped tomorrow.

I will be doing some extensive testing on the sub, it wont get more than 1000w RMS.

If i notice problems i will just have it reconed immediately by teampsi.
