Adding a digital volt meter

I ordered a voltage meter for my van so I can observe voltage stability , drops etc etc . I know I can run wires from the battery but would like to take a short cut if there is one . Can I tap into the lighters positive and negative or must it be the battery ? Any other suggestions ??

in my truck that's how I did it. Ran one from amp pos and one from amp neg and ran wires with my other wires to the front and volt display sits right in the tray underneath where my head unit is. But not sure if anyone else has or not but I put a toggle switch on my pos wire so that way I can shut it off when the vehicles not running. There's probably a better way to do it but it works good for me.

I have three wire volt meter. One pos and one neg wire and then a remote wire for on and off. No need for toggle switch with three wire Meters... But to the OP yes you want you meter wires right at the amp so you know what voltage you amp is seeing.. That's the whole reason to have a volt meter.
