ABC Enclosures designs...

I was surfing another forum and came across this...

HOW TO BUILD AN ABC ENCLOSURE
rules-

- needs to be divided into 2 chambers, 1 being 1/3 of the box, the other 2/3 of the box.

-size needs to be the biggest your sub(s) should function in.

-requires 3 ports, 1 in 1st chamber, 1 in 2nd chamber, 1 in divider board. ALL THE SAME LENGTH!

-to tune it, design it as one large ported box with 2 ports. so for an abc box, we would calc. the frequency with 2 ports. The second tuning frequency is exactly 1.9 times higher than the first(57).

This should give you a good idea of what to do. I researched and found many ways to design this type of enclosure, but this is the correct way.

ex- 6 cft abc enclosure tuned to 30HZ and 57HZ. using 4" ports. 2 4" ports in a 6cft enclosure would require 9.6 inch ports.

I'm curious if it is correct or not??

If so seems pretty easy, I thought it would be much more complicated...

They're pretty easy but I think they're a little too much work for not that much gain. You don't see a huge spike in gain at the second tuning like you would if you made a small enclosure tuned high. I really only see it as useful for cone control for subs with limited throw and really only when tuning in the 20s so that the cone is more controlled around 17-40hz.

so are you saying that with my IDMAX, if i tuned around 27hz that i wouldnt see a noticable gain in sq over a normal ported, with around the same output? and another question, is it the normal rec. volume plus 1/2 the volume, or is it doubled then divided into 1/3 and 2/3?

I noticed a very small change in sound quality and a small loss in output. Mine had a little smoother response than the ported enclosure I had that was the same size and very close in tuning. It did sound nice, but I would save the effort/space and just build a ported box with the same specs if you're just using it for car audio.

Not from what I have seen but they do offer more cone control and space isn't too much of an issue in most home setups. The reason why I say cone control is because you could have your enclosure tuned to 20hz and 38hz which would limit excursion in those regions. If your sub doesn't have a crazy amount of excursion, this could help things stay under control. My setup seemed to be a little less efficient and was NOT as loud as it's standard ported counterpart.
