93 Chevrolet Lumina - Head Unit

I've got a 1993 Chevrolet Lumina. At the moment I don't have the time or money to be buying and installing new speakers amps subs etc..

I'm not into car audio AT all, don't know anything. For now all I want to do is replace the tape player with a cd deck so I can atleast listen to some music for now. I don't know if you need to know the wattage or whatnot for the speakers, I wouldn't know. I can tell you that there are 4.

- Would this be as easy as pulling out the tape player, and switching wires from that to a new cd deck?

- How hard is it going to be to install because, where the tape player is is quite a big area, and I know that any head unit I buy won't take up all that space

this is definetly gonna be an interesting one.....

can you sodder/solder wires together? do you know how to use shrink tubing?

all you really need is a push in the right direction then for equipment, personally i'll recomend anything from pioneer or panisonic, the 2 companies i stick by the most for head units, and any electronics online store sells the install kit to fit the cd player in that larger opening, its also advised you get a wiring kit to make things a lil easier....now are your door speakers blown, or do they still work, if not, your front door speakers are 4x6's and your backs are 6x9's, standard gm speaker sizes, best bet for you would be to find the equipment you need on http://www.sounddomain.com unless someone knows of another website that sells hu's for cheaper while still giving you free install kits....yea.....

for starters, this is what you'll need to install a radio in your ride

dash install kit(required)

now i really can't recomend any hu's by model, because idk what your looking for, and how much you wanna spend, but i can at least get you started, remember, those 2 kits above are free with a headunit purchase from that website.

I heard that all I'd have to do was take the wires that went to the tape player, and plug those into my cd player with use of an adapter..

I do not have a soldering iron. Has anyone used that coldheat I always see on TV?

I do not have any door speakers, just the ones behind that back row, which I can see from the trunk (meaning I know it will be easy to replace though whenever I do) and the ones in the dash, which I think weill be a pain since I'd have to remove the entire front dash plastic thing, right?

Anyways, I don't want to mess with the speakers now id I don't have to.

you say the kit supplies everythign to make it fit, how exactly does that work?

heh, if you can find an adapter thats great, i've yet to see one though that'll take your stock tape decks wire, and make it plug right into the headunit you haven't bought yet, because none of them have the same plug on the back.

as for your rear deck speakers....they're gonna be just as hard as your dash speakers unless they really are bolted in from the bottom...yet to see that one as well.

Remember I'm not messing with the speakers at all. But with the soldering, I'd be solder the wires that were in the tape player, and that wire harness you linked me too right? Not going to have to tear everythign apart and rewire am I?

no, that wiring harness is solderd to the wiring harness of a cd/mp3 player that you purchase, and connects directly to your stock wiring harness going into the back of your stock head unit.

for the adpter, you'll need to match some wires up but its very easy, thier color coded, and you don't HAVE to solder, just twisting them together will work fine

but actually he is right, don't have to solder...lol, just its preferred, but double ended crimp on connectors are a better route than twisting and taping.

x2 on connectors being better than twisting, but for a beginer i think its just easier to twist them together

And, just for clatiry let me explain this as how I understand it. The wires going into the back of my tape player, I take those and have to color code/solder/twist whatever to that harness, then my cd player will plug right into that, correct? So pretty much it is as easy as putting the wires that are going into the tape player, taking those out and plugging them into the cd player, with that harness as an adapter so to speak..

Edit: On that harness, the end with all the wires and the end with the plastic plug, which end is going which way? Like plastic plug to cd player and wires soldered to stock tape player wires or vise versa?

lemme break this down all over again

that harness i showed you, PLUGS INTO THE STOCK HARNESS THATS PLUGGED INTO THE STOCK TAPE DECK, you solder/crimp/whatever the harness i showed you to the harness that comes with whatever cd player you get, they all come with one that plugs into the back of them and has wires that are "pre" stripped for you.

put it simple, it'll come with instructions on what parts you'll use, and which you'll toss

Just wondering it if will fit properly. I mean it doesn't state it's just for a 93 Lumina, and I know all cars don't have the same sized gap..

actually, all those cars mentioned do truely, some of them have "vanity" plates that cover up the obscene install kit though, which makes it seem as though they have a different size opening, but that shows you how litterally alot of vehicles have the same radio install.
