92 Celica GT install questions

Ok I am installing a new stereo system in my daughters 92 celica gt. It has the base stereo with tape deck and four speakers. I replaced the four speakers and hooked them to the factory wiring. They sound like crap. The left rear has no sound, the right rear distorts at half volume and the fronts sound marginally better. Tomorrow I am putting in the new HU. My question is this, is the crappy sound coming from the factory HU itself or is there an amp in these base systems that could be blown. Am I better off just running all new speaker wire to the new HU and bypass any potential amp that is in the system? How would you know if the amp is in there? Also in the rear speaker housings the wires came into the enclosure and one wire was hooked to a little coil before going to the speaker. What is it and should I leave it wired in or bypass it as well?

I appreciate the help.

The coil is precisely that. It's an inline crossover in a sense. If there are 8's in the doors it's pretty much certain you have an amp. You can run wires if you want to but that's a pretty big pain in the rear to have to fish new wires into the doors, if there is an amp, find it, pull the plugs out of it and find the side of the plug that goes to the speakers (output from amp) by stripping back wires and popping the speakers. Once you know which wires go to each speakers you can either install your own amp and tie into them here or if you just want to run everything off the radio you can just connect the outputs to the inputs and you're good to go.
