im trying to install my new unit into a 94 honda civic ex, but i cant get the stock unit out.

do i need to remove the panel around the receiver and air conditioning first? or can i slide the stock receiver out as is?

if i need to remove the panel, how do i do it?

first you have to remove the panel with the ac controls. You might have to take the top of the console apart to get the panel with ac controls out. Behind the ac controls are two 8mm bolts that hold the radio and cage in.

OEM or aftermarket headunit you're trying to remove?

if its aftermarket, you should be able to get it out using a set of radio keys on it. if its oem, then the ac and the rest of the bezel comes out.

when you buy a car used, and if it has an aftermarket HU in it, they sometimes tell you its stock. also, i didnt scrutinize the post, i was actually busy at the time i read it. installing in a 92 civic as a matter of fact. saw this and figured i'd help him out. sorry i also have a computer in my shop, so's i can check things if i need help with something in a hurry.

If you have to tell somebody how to remove an aftermarket head unit out of most cars (except some iso mount), they shouldn't be trying to install a stereo in the first place. If you are an installer you can appreciate that.

How do you think installers learned? I own two stores and have been installing 16 years, yet any time a vehicle changes it takes time to find out how it comes apart, a good case in point was the last major change to the Chevy cavalier, it took me an hour to figure it out, I would rather take my time and learn as compared to be quick and pry and damage panels. As an installer I'll be glad to help people learn, so ask away, they are a lot of knowledgeable people on these forums.

Ever tried an old Celebrity with old dash panels that crack when you try and remove them or pry too hard? For us in Canada we did not have the resources available to us at the time when in particular the Cavalier came out. Does it take me an hour now, no, more like 10 minutes. But to sit and learn and be interupted and to teach someone else at the same time, yes it took an hour. If you want to be my guinea pig I'll be sure to rush my next install job on your car. I prefer that my business be as thorough as possible and if means a little more time, so be it.

thanks but no thanks... i found how to remove the unit on my own... i removed the panel below the unit (where the cigarette lighter and ashtray are) and removed the screws from below the cage, then simply slid the thing out from below.

removing the airconditioning controls would be troublesome and unnecessary. not to mention the risk of cracking the panel (it doesnt exaclty just pop off like a door panel)... forbidden was right, its better to take time and do it right than damage your car.

and yes, this is my first install. ive got to learn sometime... you, turbo328, were once as ignorant as myself im sure. maybe you even figured it out yourself like i did...

but at least i didnt practically take out the whole dash to remove the air conditioning......
