Ok, this guy I know is sayin hes goin to get 3 different size subs (10, 12, & 15) and put it in a box. the box he says will have three different chambers powered by 3 different amps. Now i tell him that its not goin to work because they will cancel out. He keeps telling me that it will work because each sub has a different peak frequency.

so my question is who is rite, me or him?

I guess if someone is stupid enough to do something like that their is no convincing them otherwise, their lack of intelligence about the subject unfortunately wont change.

i once ran 2 12s in bandpass under a sleeper and 2 10s sealed behind the seats in one of my trucks with none of the ill effects you speak of. it actually sounded pretty good and you could tell the diffrence if one or the other pairs were disconnected. the 12s would hit the low boomy bass and the 10s were tight and punchy.

IF they are in totally seperate chambers, they will not cancel out. However, it is kind of dumb to do it that way. I could maybe see an 18 in the back and 8's or 10's in the doors for an up front bass deal. But running 3 different size subs in the back is a waste IMHO.

Your both wrong.

It will work, but peak freq is irrelevent. They are all additive and their won't be anymore cancelling out that with any other subs or identical subs (there is always some cancelling and adding harmonics in any room) . As long as the drivers are close together and the chambers are different, it's fine. Stupid, but find.

It's pointless and I would not recommend it because getting them to sound good together is will be almost impossible. All speakers sound different. At least when they are all the same you can manipulate their sound by moving the box, adding some padding, adjusting the e.q., etc. But when they are all different they will also react differently to those techniques so you fix the sound of one, and it will make another sound worse. It is unlikely you will ever get them all to sound good together.

But obviously he only cares about looks, not sound.

Well, you're wrong, too.
There will be cancellation more that with using multiple of the same driver because the different drivers will have both different phase response and group delay. What you will end up with is a giant smear of sound because the drivers will never "sync up" and play the same freqs at the same time.
