2 Subwoofer questions!

OK #1... a) What is the point in inverting a sub?

b) Is it just for looks?

c) Will this mess up the Sub if I do it (is there a certain way it has to be done)?

#2... I've heard that if you underpower a sub it is bad for it. Is this true? because I dont understand how that could be bad for it.

Thank you very much and Im sorry for being a newbie! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

There is no point it in. The sub want rattel as bad if you do that. There isn't a certain way to do it. I have never herd of under powering a sub so it isn't bad for it if you aint got the watts.

Some people invert the sub for looks, but it DOES actually make your enclosure larger. Well, the enclosure is the same size but you aren't subtracting the amount of space your sub magnet and everything mounted behind the cone displaces.

As for underpowering the subs... you kind of want to stay away from that. A lot of subs are rated very conservatively these days, which means they run better with slightly more power than the company says it could take. I know my Rockford T1 is rated at 600 watts rms from the factory, but most people give it 800-1000 watts rms every day and it sounds great.

There is nothing wrong with inverting the sub. Sometimes it changes the sound a bit, but it is easily fixed by reversing the polarity of the wires. It's mainly just for looks, but you can gain a hair of box volume by doing that.

Second, there is nothing wrong with underpowering a sub. However, if you have a sub that you're pushing with an amp that's smaller than the sub's power handling capability and you crank the gain on the amp, you're bound to clip the woofer to death. If you set the gains properly on an amp that's too small, it won't harm the woofer.

OK #1... a) What is the point in inverting a sub?
Looks primarily.

b) Is it just for looks?
99.9% of the time, yes.

Once every great while someone does it to gain a little more enclosure volume without having to build/buy a new box.

But most times, just for looks.

c) Will this mess up the Sub if I do it (is there a certain way it has to be done)?
No...other than to be sure that the surround doesn't rub against the opening.

#2... I've heard that if you underpower a sub it is bad for it. Is this true? because I dont understand how that could be bad for it.
That is totally, utterly, and completely false.
