2 channel amp for 1 sub?

What do you guys think about bridging a 2 channel amp for use with 1 sub? My buddy did this recently and it's not that bad. Plus most mono amps cost a lot of money compared to a 2 channel counterpart that can supposedly put out the same RMS wattage...What do you guys think? Are those 2 channel amps telling the truth? Or should I just say **** it and spend like $30 more and get the mono?

I don't think there is anything wrong with bridging, as long as it is stable at the impedance you are wiring your subs to. In fact, I am thinking of getting a stereo amp and bridging it for my sub. That way, I can use the amp later for 2 subs, or for some nice components. I would probably hate myself later for buying a mono. I say go for it.

the only benifit I see to the mono, is that they are "generally" class-d amps, making thtem more efficient. clas-d are usually in the range of 80% - 90% where A/B class amps are significantly lower.

Continuing that thought -- with a single sub only needing 200-500w (??) the benefit of efficiency using a class D won't be noticed nearly as much as a sub or subs needing power around 1000w or more.

Nothing wrong with a 2 ch driving a sub or subs, or a 4 ch for that matter

10 years ago there weren't ANY class D's or mono's. It's really not an issue -- whatever works.

with Class A/B amps their efficiency goes up with more power and is near 25% at low volume, Class D at low volume is near 70-75%, that's why you wonder when you play your amp at hella loud volume levels the amp is cool to the touch, that's Class D for ya //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
