2 channel 250W Amp... Help!

Hi. I've got a 2 channel 250W amp that is going to be used to power 2 x 6 and a half inch subs. It's not going to be in a car, but on my home stereo. I need a 12V DC Power Supply to get the amp going, but don't know how to do this. Will it be possible to get 2 x 6 Volt batteries and wire them up to the amp? Will i need to get a car battery? How long will these last, if possible at all? Is there some sort of transformer that plugs straight into the mains outlet at my house that will convert down to 12V? Do I need to know anything about grounds? I really need to know how to do this, any help will be appreciated.
