I have 2 Alpine Type X 10's currently in 3.2^ @ 36hz....a local guy has a BNIB 2008 L7 15" he wants to trade me (he's also throwing in $50). I am running the 2 Alpines on my Brutus 2008d @ 1 ohm....would the L7 be louder on the same amp? Which has more cone area? Someone help me out here...

I would but he has it in a 2.8^ prefab ported, my experience with L7 15s is that they don't really come to life unless you have around 4.5^.... so to audition it in my car would be useless I think. My Type Xs are loud as ****...

Where are people coming up with these vs. threads? You do realize that those subs would almost NEVER be bought by the same person? The Type X is one of the best SQ subwoofers money can buy, and the L7 is a pure SPL subwoofer.

Throw it in 4.75 cubic feet and then it'll start to wake up.

I can answer the cone area question.

Area = pi x radius squared

Area of your two 10's = 157.1 square inches

Area of one 15 = 176.7 square inches

Did you just use the formula of finding the area of a circle, on a square object?

Yep, I think you did, moron.

Although, this would be relevant if the L7 was circular in shape, but it's not.

well what is the cone area difference then? I think the 2 type x's may be louder because they have more xmax but a little less cone area.... isnt it some thing like sd X xmax = Vd?

OK, so the L7 is even more bigger than his two 10's.

Yep, that's right, I said more bigger.

Edit: In fact, 15" x 15" = 225 square inches, which is 43.2% square inches more area than two 10's.

The formula for a flat circle at that. The actual formula for a cone is different.
I asked about that in another thread, can't remember which one now, but the posters there said the opposite of that. I'll look for it ...

(Edit 1: Actually, I should say, yes, I know the surface area of a cone is a different formula than for a flat circle; The posters in the other thread said you do not consider the conical aspect when comparing woofer areas. Not that it really matters to me, but I'll see if I can find it ...)

I would just go with a ported box tuned from 32 hz. - 35 hz.
