18" BTL box issues.....

George, I am simply looking for others opinions and recommendations. I have seen alot of contradicting articles on aero's vs. slots, and just want to be sure of what I am doing for this build since it is going to be extremely difficult to change if the results aren't there. I am going to take your recommendation and run Aero's. I very much appreciated your help in this.

im not trying to be a dick bro. im just saying that you have opinions and some proof from some very very respected members. devildriver being one, who showed mathematically that you have a 56% reduction in vent velocity using aeros.

i know it can be hard to decide on something especially when im one of the only people actually responding to your question and you want 2nd opinions, and i cant blame you. im just saying, that for your situation, youd be best off with the aeros even considering cost, because you need to maxout your box volume as best as you can //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

You can use a shorter (less volume) port and less port area, but you will increase "port velocity," (rate the air moves through the port). As it starts to move more quickly, you can begin to hear the whooshing sound know as port noise.

The aero's have that flange that eliminates the edge that the air shoots over, making that noise.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. This is info that I have gleamed (and makes sense) from the various car audio websites and stuff from this forum.

wouldnt a well sanded port do the same?

maybe go over with a roundover bit??

Well, I'll run four 6" Aero's, at 17" to tune it to 33 Hz. It equates to 113.1 sq. inches of aero port, and will give me a total of 11.13 cubes after displacement for the pair of 18's. It's my best option.

Well, today I built the box. It turns out that my rear hatch was on a bit of a slant, so I carried that slant and built a wedge box instead. This gives me 4" to the rear hatch, instead of the 3" I was going to have. The box works out to about 12.5 cubes, before displacement. Subs will be inverted.

George, what do you think about port location? Should I place the four aeroports across the bottom, or should I stack them two-by-two high?

Dimensions are hard to read in the photo, in case you're interested.

Top: 21.5" deep

Top Width: 53"

Bottom: 26" deep

Bottom Width: 42"

Lower shelf height: 10.25"

Upper shelf height: 12"

to tell you the truth, i would try to find someone with the same vehicle as you and ask what they have noticed.

for me, i have never noticed any difference to the ear, on port location in my explorer.

I am a member of fjcruiserforums.com, but nobody has really done any big systems. The most I've seen is two 10's, and they're facing sideways on top of the wheel wells.

I think I will place them at the bottom then. Thanks man. Now all I have to do is slight bracing, a couple 45's, and some resin //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

ive done along the bottom, along 1 side, along the other side, and along the top.

going up sucked ***, going back (side of bottom) sounded great with no real difference to my ears.

btw: we need pics //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
