15'' type R vs 13.5 Jl audio w6v2 or a beefy 12

Ok folks

I already have a alpine type R 15 in a ported box built to spec getting 1000 Rms and it has a great amount of output but overall doesnt sound all that great.

Now there is a **** w6v2 for sale here on the forum and after reading about it , it does seem like a better SQ sub it also doesnt require such a large ported box with is a plus since i drive a 2000 vw golf.

Should i replace the type R , sell it locally then install the w6v2 ? or maybe buy a beefy 12 that also will fullfill my needs SQL with 1000 watts rms @ 2 ohms

Or Lastly is it even possible to get the type R to sound better? Say get Ram designs to make me a really nice custom box and clean it up without changing drivers at all?

Main goals are Sql

Music listend to is mostly rap but with lots of other things and the gf listens to a lot of pop crap.

Box will be ported for anything i run.

Cost under 400 shipped to Canada for just the subs nothing else .

3 cubic feet , tuned to 31 with a 3 inch slot port

jl's ste says the w6 wants 1.75 ( unknown tuning ) and a 1.75 inch port , so i assume much higher tuning like 34-36? however its almost half the size

Sounds similar to a box I had for my RE SE/x 15. Its box was 4 cubes @ 31 hz (it has a higher Vas than Type R), and I HATED it. Peaky. No lows. Etc. One thing that helped it was stuffing it with polyfill. That reduced the peak, tuned it slightly lower, and cleaned it up, but it still wasn't enough.

IMO: with a sub like that, you would be better off building a bigger, lower tuned box, like no higher than 27 hz. However, I see that space is a concern. A quick test to see how it would sound sealed is easy. Cover the port with a piece of MDF, and see what you think of the SQ. It's worth trying, but beware of the DB loss, but a flatter response will result.

So, if a larger box is out, and it doesn't sound good sealed, maybe the Icon mentioned above would be a good fit. IMO: Tune it low though... Don't just toss it in that same box.

There are definitely ways to make the type R sound better but if you are truly worried about space constraints then i would just go with a smaller sub. Im not sure why people are trying to steer you away from picking up that JL w6. Whether people admit it or not JL has quality products. If you dont have to pay retail on it then i wouldnt bat an eye, i would get it. Build it a ported box 2.5 cubes tuned to 30 Hz and call it a day. Or you can try out SKAR audio and their VVX 12. It loves the low end and sounds great as well.

well of all the subs jl makes i would take the w6v2 over any of them even the w7 mostly due to the fact the voice coil is a single 3 or dual 1.5 and im not buying a JL amp .....

Even if i can get 75% of the output of the type R 15 from a ported w6v2 i would be happy. Just wondering how hard it would knock and how good it would sound.
