12's not loud before enclosure???

I understand and that was rather implied when I said there's no separation between front and back waves, creating a canceling effect with minor residuals.
And that's true, as dipole operates in nearly the same manner but without complete separation of front/back waves like IB.
You said a sub without acoustic suspension is useless. That's simply incorrect. I do not know how else to put that, other than to point to IB setups.

When you run a speaker with no baffle to separate front and rear waves, do you still hear it make noise? Then what are we arguing about here, your definition of what is "minor"? Im not interested in that debate. But I do still stand by my statement that you will definitely not come anywhere close to complete cancellation.

Cheers.

You weren't sure placing the subs in an enclosure, rather thn just sitting them on the floor on their magnets, would improve performance?
All I knew was that people use enclosures.

What I didn't know was how bad either a sub or full-range would sound not in an enclosure. I had no idea I would almost not even be able to hear the sub. Like the OP, I also thought maybe something was wrong, but kept on with making my enclosure. Had to learn somehow, right.

I do fully admit to being a member of the noobyhood ... even more so back then. I know a little more, now, but only a little.

Oh, and I also wired my Kicker sub, and set it back in its shipping cardboard box, and duct taped it all up pretty, just to see if that would increase the volume or bass: Very, very little, if anything.

Man I was antsy, a newb, and just wanted to hear it!!

(I fully expect, and hope, several members will add that comment to their signature!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!)

Please re-read bold part above. I agreed with you that you were right and I mis-stated what I meant.

And yes, for sub-bass frequencies, usually what you play with subwoofers, your residual waves will be immaterial when compared to a reasonable box for that speaker. (Again, notice my revision to immaterial from "complete cancellation")

I missed the dipole comment the first time. My bad.

Immaterial is just a fancier way of saying minor. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Heh, yeah it is. I thought you were trolling so I was out to make the point. No offense intended
