$12K----What car to buy?

Get a VW Golf or GTI. Got speed, a hatch that will hold several bodies, and VW's are pretty reliable. If you buy one from a dealer, you can also get an extended warranty so you don't have to worry about repairs. Plus you will unpimp the auto!!

i never even drove mine and shit went to hell with it.
same with everyone i know, and the cost of repairs.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

ridiculous.

Or if you want the ultimate in reliability and fuel economy, get a MkII Golf/Rabbit diesel and convert it to burn vegetable oil! Sure your car will smell like french fries driving down the road, but you can get the oil for free from any restaurant. The kit to convert it only costs like $1500! And it gets like 60MPG!!

Paying a difference in 87 vz 93 is so small, that I don't understand why people even bother wasting their time debating the issue. Normally by filling up with 87, you only save about $4 per fill up. If you fill up once a week, then you are looking at only saving ($16) about $20 a month. Your car deserves premium fuel if it is recommended by the manufacturer. My Monte Carlo only requires 87, but after I started using 93 about 2 years ago the performance of my car was sooooo much better. I even get about 3-4 more miles per gallon. Basically fellaz, if you value your car's performance then you will use premium gas.
My local gas station prices:

87 2.099

89 2.199

93 2.299

My car holds 16 Gallons of fuel. If I use 87, then I spend $33.58; 89 $35.18; $36.78. A difference of only $3.20!!!

The power output of an engine depends on the energy content of its fuel, and this bears no simple relationship to the octane rating. A common myth amongst petrol consumers is that adding a higher octane fuel to a vehicle's engine will increase its performance and/or lessen its fuel consumption; this is false—engines perform best when using fuel with the octane rating they were designed for and any increase in performance by using a fuel with a different octane rating is minimal or even imaginary.

octane is not defined as power potential. octane basically has to do with when the fuel detonates/combusts. putting higher octane fuels in cars that are designed to run on lower octanes DOES NOT help your car in any way, and can actually hurt it in some situations...

My VW says it requires 91 or higher. So I don't risk it, 93 octane every day.
that's different than some noob who puts 93 in an engine designed to take 87 and claims to see preformance and mpg differences

but he left the thread so he won't even read that anyway.

ridiculous.
I think its luck of the draw really. But as far as cars go, and i've owned about 8 now the highlights good and bad are.

Honda's - very good cars

but with the f blocks egr valves were bound to be replaced before 150k miles (which honestly, is great)

honda had horrible auto's, and i have reason to believe this was the case up until ~01

honda manual's however are probably the best you can buy for the money. crisp shifts, very durable, great pedal feel.

Lexus - Never had one problem for the year i owned one (until it got totaled, and even then the police officer said he had never seen a vehicle take a side impact from a vehicle that big --- ups truck --- so well)

image quality sucks i know, welcome to 02

best experience i have ever had with a company. Dealership was top notch, if there was a problem they fixed it no questions asked and gave me a loaner vehicle. Treated me like an actual person... was very nice.

Ford- Owned a Mustang GT. Car was a total piece of shit. Everything worked just like it should... which was the problem. Rental car interior, horrible acceleration, handling matched by school busses.

But in 10 years it never broke down... not even once. Only things i ever replaced were batterys... That was only one. (oh, and oil filters)

VW- ARGH, bad experience. still a great car though.

if you advance the timing you might see results....

but how many consumers actually do that?

Only reason we don't use 91 is because we can't get it here. We have 87, 89, and 93. Some stations have 94 too. But we always use Hess gas. So it's 93 for us. And all of their oil is from the US and Canada, so I'm not contributing to terrorism.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I used to work for Honda, yes, their Auto's are garbage. I was raised on Fords, now my parents both drive Hondas. Fords were that bad to us!

The VW...well, I like it, a LOT! It's the wife's car, but I drive the snot out of it. Just a really fun car to drive. Lots of power, 1.8T, gets 26MPG in the city, all options, and less than 10 grand used. Can't beat it with a stick. Oh, and we got the extended warranty bumper to bumper for the next 3 years, so even if it breaks, I'm covered.
