Over a year ago I had my heart set on an Alpine CDA-7995, because it didn't have the built-in amp and it also had other nice features (can't remember any specific ones right now). Would it still be a good purchase if I could find a new or fairly new one off ebay or should I get Alpine's updated...

Yep, bought two subs and an amp from them, and all got here safe and sound. My friend also bought an amp from them and he got it just fine.

My friend has that sub in a sealed box (I think like, maybe 1.2 ft^3) powered by a A12001D 1200W (@ 1 ohm) and it sounds goooooooooooooooood. A ported box would be best for this sub, but for what you want, a sealed box will work just fine. PS: You can get that amp off ebay for about 300 bucks...

I posted a question over in the HU forum (Alpine 7995 vs 7894) but I wanted to ask a more general part of the question over here too. Why would you want a HU with no built in amp? Does a built in amp get in the way of a seperate amp? I mean, if it doesn't, why would you NOT want that option...

So most of the people here have the idea that CDT is a company who makes quality speakers (6.5, 5.25, 6x9, tweeters, etc), but I've never heard anybody talk about their subs. Does anybody know what they sound like and whether they lean more towards SQ or SPL type subs? Thanks for the info
