Computer building, I am

Nothing wrong with Lite-on DVD burners. Right now I am using ASUS Sata ones that I bought as OEM NIP from Newegg 4 years ago. I bought 4 of them at 10.99 a piece vs 18.99 for the retail box ones. Stocked up with those 4 and now have one left as I used one in this tower and then one in each of my parents towers I did for them a couple years ago.

LG, ASUS really doesn't matter both are good companies and work on the dvd burner stuff. I would buy a Blu-Ray burner but eh no use for it right now.

I think my MB might be reading my CPU temps artificially high, by a couple degrees C or so. I downloaded a equipment tracker basically, and I was idling at like 33-36 C, where the MB in BIOS was showing 37-41C. The highest I hit yesterday was like 55C or so, that was while downloading a few things and installing them all at the same time, and having all my fans and AIO on low factory settings.

Yeah Lite-on is good. They made a name for themselves with the etching laser on top for labeling CD's. They're about equivalent to Sony. With CD/DVD Drives I've never actually had one go bad except for the opening mechanism. So long as that's still perky and it's not sluggish then there's almost no reason to go newer. As you can imagine the technology with DVD burning hasn't come very far since nobody expects it to be an instant process. The only thing they've done in 8 years is introduce 4k blu ray readers and last I checked pioneer is the only one who did it (and released it only in Japan) because hollywood clamped down hard on encryption and seemed to really not like the idea of a computer playing their fancy high res films. It's limited to end to end encryption so you need a certain CPU/GPU/Monitor + special adapters if you use any to go from the GPU to the monitor.

It looks like a lot of other brands have the speed to do 4k blu rays now but there seems to be a regulatory thing going on where the companies purposefully prevent their devices from doing it. Asus released a driver for one of theirs that disables its ability so you have to use an older firmware version.. so stupid.

Redoing my paste, wish me luck. Once I do this, I'm hoping to park black betty where she's going to reside for some time.

And idk if you can see it, but some of the paste was kind of stacked up on the edge. Idk, to me it looks like it didn't spread out very well or something. Could be my fault, could be the paste's fault, or both. Idk.

Nope not supposed to be that way. Those pre-applied pastes never paste never contact correctly. When doing the past now. I take the CPU out of the motherboard very carefully of course. I clean and purify the CPU with a small soft cloth. Don't want to do that with it in the motherboard just in case. I then apply the paste to the cpu with a small thin layer so the entire top of the CPU is covered, don't get it on the sides and if you do clean it off with that soft cloth. Double check that there is enough on there, make sure nothing is on the side.

Clean of course the cooler with the cleaner and purifier with a few drops wipe it off with the cloth. May take a few drops and cleaning of the cloth as that stuff can be a pita to get off sometimes.

Once you double check everything a couple times put the cooler back on the CPU carefully, lock it into place and let it sit for a couple hours so it has time to setup. Any questions text me!

Yeah I took the cpu out and cleaned it off and just ran the cooler block out the side of the case I suspect that paste was old and dry from sitting on the shelf. That #1 compound smells like an oragne air freshener you get at a car wash lol

lol Doesn't to me but maybe they added a scent to it since I last bought it a couple years ago

There's definitely a scent to it. I'm running my fan on high just letting this stuff dry. The CPU cooler copper is a little scratched but it's just from how hard you have to put it on, this cooler is know for that. I'll take some pics, just kind of letting them air off. Took a bright flashlight and was making sure there's no loose threads or fibers mixing in with my paste.
