XXX vs. MX

correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't xbl^2 cause the sound to be a little muddy?
That's incorrect. The one and only real gripe I can see made about the XXX is upper frequency extension, which isn't that surprising, given an Le of over 4mH, which is going to limit high frequency extension.

As someone said before, you'll want fairly good midbass to match with it, as it doesn't have quite the upper frequency extension that some of its rivals have.

There is no way a particular motor topology could make a driver sound "Muddy", I'd recommend ignoring any future motor topology "insights" from whatever person told you that.

So, what is opinion here and fact. The fact is, the MX is more accurate. And will have more distortion at any volume level because the lower BL and the lack of XBL^2. But the distortion of both woofers doesn't come into play in my SQ setup at normal listening levels.
So in other words, subjectively, you prefer the sound of the MX, and thus, you deem it to be more accurate? I have no problems with that.

Hmmm, We had to replace the XXX's in the XXX Truck twice over time because the suspension became sooo loose you couldn't even play them anymore or they would just "bottom out" at 1/2 power.
If that's not a loss in accuracy, I don't know what is.
Weird nobody else, myself included whose owned two xxx's, has ever reported this otherwise major design flaw (for lack of a better term). Can you explain why you feel this is the only sub that seems to have this problem, when its basic design is the same as 99% of the other subs out there? It uses spiders and a half roll surround, just like virtually every speaker made. Just seems like, a year after they've stopped being made, we'd have heard someone else with this dibilitating problem. Or that I myself would have seen the symptoms. No loss of accuracy here. *shrug*

When you had this problem, you just kept swapping out more and more subs?

b.s.. the spider is a critical factor for sound results. so much that tuning the spider is considered an art and not a science. and an art because of the # of people who try to produce, but will never get it as good as the elite high end builders.

I just wish you could tell me how you have concluded that is a fact. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Again, unless you can tell me how you've scientifically determined 'accuracy' in your install when comparing different raw drivers, Im gonna have to continue to assert that would be an opinion, not a fact as you say. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Distortion CAN be measured scientifically, and it points to the XXX being superior in accuracy.
Did I mention I prefer the sound of non BL optimized drivers too? But at least I realize why, and dont pretend to myself that my ears hear accuracy differences that aren't there. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

What on earth are you talking about? Once the spider is installed, you aren't going to be able to "tune it".

Lastly, it's 100% science.

A spider needs to do 2 things, and 2 things only:

1) Provide the desired Cms for the application

2) Allow a minimum of lateral movement of the coil

Thats it. There are no magical special art qualities, it provides the required Cms, and doesnt allow the coil to move excessively in a lateral fashion.

The only speaker I know of with a "tuneable" spider is the Stroker, and even then, all you are doing is adjusting the coil's centering, which can hardly be called "tuning" the spider.

Don't be so hard on Ryan guys,
because so far I think he is the only one in this thread qualified enough to speak on these drivers, and to speak on 'fact'.
And what are your qualifications to qualify his qualifications???!!?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Facts are there for anyone to see/read/compute. Quit following the leader. If you think Warbleed doesn't know the facts here, you dont know what you are talking about. If you want to participate, go read the facts for yourself and then present your own interpretation.

Spiders loosen up on all subs. It's not a flaw. The XXX Truck has 1,000rms going to each sub in a enclosure that is tuned @ 28Hz. It plays the lows like no other. For example, 155+ @ 30Hz sealed up. When the spiders would loosen up, the subs would bottom out. Sure, this is a worse case scenario. Or best case however you look at it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
