XXX mids vs. Adire Audio Extremis

So it'll be bias in favor of the driver's seat?

As far as which speaker to get, I'd personally go for the XXX mids, because I know I would never be able to get the imaging that good. If you know you could, I'd go with the 8ohm extremis.

my... head... rest? actually my left and right ear respectively...
O, each speaker at the driver's head then? No love for the passengers, eh? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hmmmm, the extremis are really that hard the setup? I'll go with the XXX mids then.

Edit: does anyone have any Theil/Small parameters for the XXX mids?

fu(k the passengers! if they're that worried about it, they can drive thier own car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif thats what i say at least. i have my RE 6.5's aimed at my left and right ears respectivly. sounds real nice that way //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The XXX mids and the Extremis share the same Coil, Spider, Cone, and Basket. Basically the same soft parts, if you look back on soundillusions, when Dan had a thread about CES 2004...you'll see the extremis prototype that looks DEAD ON the current production XXX mids.

The Extremis use a Neo, Video-shielded motor. They are slightly more efficient, and have a slightly lower Fs (obviously b/c of the different motor structure/assembly). The XXX mids can handle more power, and were MADE for an in-car environment.

I use XXX mids, Jason (undercoverpunk) uses Extremis mids. I've heard them playing full-range free-air...but not in a finished product. Jason's ported pods are requiring A LOT of work...if he gets done in time...we'll be able to do a straight up SWAP-OUT of the Extremis vs. The XXX mids. BUT, that will not be happening in the very near future...as the fabrication of his pods are extremely complicated.

Basically, it all comes down to power @8ohms and power @2ohms. I was ALL OVER the extremis mids, but completely changed my mind and went with the XXXmids which I now use b/c of the easyness to supply a good amount of power.

Later...

i copied/pasted these from someone else's post so i'm not 100% sure but...

RE-XXX 6.5" Mids:

RE: 1.75 Ohms

Fs: 47.4 Hz

Qms: 2.33

Qes: 0.59

Qts: 0.473

Mms: 15.04 g

Cms: 7.505E-04

Vas: 21.49 ltr

1- way Xmax: 13mm linear

Le: 0.14mH

Bl: 3.636 t/m

Power: 150wrms

Spl: 87.75 dB 1W/1m

The XXX mids are almost the same thing as the extremis....
I know their similar, but we're talkin about audio here, a slight difference (like, for example, not mounting a driver flush with the baffle) can make a huge differnce. I'd much rather ask than assume and assume wrong.

Hmmm, that makes the XXX mids more attractive thatn the extremis, BUT, I still would like to see the swap comparison, whenever that happens.

It appeared to me that you were assuming the XXX mids had better off axis dispersion... and well, me and Noah will have to get together soon so we can determine that for sure..

Yeah, I was assuming they did, but I'm going to wait before I make any conclusions.

Jlaine has 4 ohm extremis mids... I say they shouldn't be used by inexperienced users because they are EXTREMELY directional... if you are using them in a 3 way setup you probably know what you're doing.
But for a 2 way setup keep in mind you will want to aim these to get all that the have.
No more directional than any other 6.5" out to date - directivity is more of a function of frequency and cone size than the actual driver itself.

The Extremis will be offered on 4 ohmns? Did you hear this from a credable source? Dan over at soundillusions.com said that they will not offer the Extremis at 4 ohmns, although, that was a while ago.
Also, y do you say that these mids ar enot for inexperienced enthusiasts? While, I have never done a car install, I have experience building speakers for home use. I think the biggest problem would be setting the crossover correctly, and I plan on using an active setup, either an Eclipse HU, or an outboard unit.

Edit: The lower resonant frequency of the extremis is attractive, one point for the extremis.
Soundillusions.net! Hrmph.

They are in desgining - personally with the choices as they sit today (8 ohm extremis vs. 2 ohm xxx) - I'd not hesitate and get a set of XXX's immediately. Eventually you'll see car-related components with the extremis 4 ohm driver involved, but that's a ways down the road AFAIK - primary focus for now is getting the sub lines out.
