xbox (not 360) has bad disk drive?

I just bought the xbox of ebay a week or so ago. It worked fine, except every now and then when I put the disk in with out turning the system off it will never load and say Disk error, may be dirty or damaged. I know the games are not dirty or damaged because they look like they are brand new. Halo and NFL Blitz 03 seem to be the only games I can get to work all the time. I bought GTA San Andreas which was brand new and it wont load, it gets half way through the load scene and says disk may be dirty or damaged. I got NFS Most Wanted and it does the same thing.

Before I tried those new games I put a laser Lens cleaner in the xbox, it said it would work with Xbox, Playstation and DVD players. It loaded up just fine and it asked to select language and then it froze on that screen and now I can get it to load the DVD at all After that I tried the new games and none of them work. You think that screwed my disk drive up???

If so anyone know how I can fix it or where I can buy a replacement?

Probably a Tompson drive. They go out all the time. Search around on Ebay for Xbox drive, and you will find many choices. Try to go with a Phillips or a Samsung. It's just about one of the only parts you can change without having to do something else. Only takes a couple of minutes.

mine did the same thing about a week after 360 came out. i think it was a plot by microsoft to force me to purchase a 360 lol

Yo I also have an X box. I would love to mod it or be able to save disk to the hard drive and so forth. Any ideas on how I can passably start doing this? I would love to know.

Yeah its a thompson drive. I found that much out. Found some on ebay, but the sellers seem kinda shady so gonna keep looking. Sucks I only got to play it for a few days before having to dump more money into it.

Someone said that replacing the cables with SATA166 or 133 or something would help with load times? Anyone know if thats true

Yeah switching to 80 pin ATA-133 cbles will improve load times a hair, more on modded xboxes where everything is read fromthe harddrive.

Took my xbox apart and took the drive out. I took the drive apart and used a qtip and cleaned the lens and mirror with rubbing alcohol and put it all back together and it works pretty well. Loads all the games. *knock on wood*

Been playing NFS MW and even NFSU2 which was is scratched up so badly iam suprised it works. Music skips every now and then, but the game runs good.
