x889 +15 sub for full signal?

Just curious if my Kenwood x889 unit requires +15 sub for a full signal like the alpines? I have my gain set using the DMM method and I can barely hear it, but the +15 sound right where it should be. Is it common on most HU's or am I doing something wrong. I'm also considering using a line driver.

Yeah, it's normal. The sub level controls the preout voltage.

Yeah, I figured I'd feel safer using that rather then then blasting the gain all the way up on the amp.
