X-max vs cone area

For the guys who knows best, what would be better, tons of cheap cone area or fewer bad *** subs? ive done research and i see some people say that xmax isnt that important in ported systems as it is in sealed systems. i do know that with ported around tunning freq, xmax is grately reduced. so

SO, ON paper example 4 BTL 18s would move more air that 12 12" kicker CVRS but by the system being ported, not really relying on xmax around tunning freq, would the 12 12's still move more air or not?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

12 cvrs have more cone area.... as far as moving more air, depends on alot, with something that big your going to have to take into account the amount of volume you have left in the vehicle after the box, cuz either way, that box is going to be gigantic

true

Daang you better be driving a school bus lol
i got over 100 cubes lol. and anything is possible its been proven times and times again, if you got tons of power you can get away with an smaller box. look at frankie rio with 12 12s ported in an **** Sedan!

If both setups are tuned to the same frequency and given the same power, the setup that will be louder will be the one that has the most total volumetric displacement at a given frequency. If you're only comparing around the tuning frequency, the 18's will have to be moving a greater distance to overcome the cone area advantage of the 12's. If both setups have the same amount of excursion, the max cone area will be the determining factor.

It's hard to speculate when you're not comparing apples to apples.

efficency is key in any aligment.. displacement is only a portion of output.. motor strength, powerhandling, having a good linear motor, great cone strength..etc.. most importantly the proper tune and alignment. .. list me see some system parameters and i would be glad to help you choose...

If you feel loud is only a product of displacement, then the question is indeed one of "cone area or Xmax". In that situation, you want the most cone area you can use for the enclosure space available, then look for as much stroke as you need to achieve your output goals.

However, efficiency and power handling play a very big role. If you look at the loudest drivers in SPL competition, they are basically all highly efficient drivers. The lower in frequency you go, the more important displacement (via cone area and Xmax) becomes, but efficiency in a vehicle often trumps all for output with music.

For music/daily, go with more low power subs. For straight burp numbers, go with less high power subs.

Theres a reason pretty much every 159 class Bassrace car has 8+ subs, with many even having 12-24.

If you want to get really loud on music, it takes cone area and power.

Yeap. Having a lot of drivers helps with heat dissipation too. Most of us that have burp monsters with low cone area are not able to play loud for a long period of time without damaging the sub.

Totally. Some of the people on here may be doing a 150 with a single Type R 15, but thats like 2500-3000rms to the single sub. It will play music for maybe 30 seconds... But no longer.

For instance you could run a single 18 and 4,000rms. Would be loud, but not good for daily music. With the same power you could run 8 15s at 500rms each. Something like 8 CVR 15s would destroy the single 18.

Cone area FTW.
