WTF is up with this headunit?

Hey guys I just bought a Panasonic CQ-HR1003U headunit and for some reason the display's letter/number/symbols are all messed up and barely readable. It also won't accept CD's into the slot. The radio, remote, and everything else works fine. Could it be that the unit isn't gounded properly? Or should I just send the HU back and get another one?

I'm pretty sure that the wiring is right. I had local car audio guys look over it and they said it was straight. Plus the screen lights up and everything, just the characters are like random dots. The CD slot also makes a "crunching" sound when I hit the manual eject button, but nothing is in it. And like I said, the radio functions, the screen changes color, etc. Just that it isn't readable, and the CD thing won't take CD's.
