Would you ever not install your own gear?

Maybe if they were building a custom box that's probably the only time unless I knew the person well

i'm an installer. i see all you guys that talk **** about how shops don't know anything than i see your crap install and than you try getting me to install an alarm b/c you're retarded. than i get to hear the 1 million reasons how you'd do it yourself but you don't have time, which is bs b/c you can't even identify a relay much less wire one up.
Whoa knowing how to wire up a relay totally validates your superior knowledge... I mean you gotta go to college or something to learn that!

But any how, when I go to a shop and start talking about xmax and I get blank looks and he thinks pa reapers are the bomb, he got 4 in his truck,i I gotta think that I wouldn't let him near my car nor take any advice from him about what's what. He's never even heard of SSA, ascendant or Fi?! Not all shops are like this but most small town shops are ran by ppl who just sell a product, not enthusiasts. Just saying

Why would they know Fi? A lot of the older guys know Atomic. And I bet they know about stuff you have never heard of

Well I'm 40 and dude is a couple of yrs younger then me maybe. And it's entirely possible that he does know all kinds of stuff I've never heard and I'm not even saying he has nothing to bring to the table, but this is the third small pa town I've lived in and I have yet to come across someone in a shop that I could say, "now this dude knows his ****". And I'm not saying there aren't any knowledgeable small town owners just none I've seen.

The guy I used wasn't up to speed on all the new stuff. Didn't mean he don't know how to do a good install. That stuff hasn't changed.

He does sell DD and Audison and installs and tunes bit ones very good.

A good installation tech should be able to make anything of at least decent quality sound good or any RS or security system work, given enough time to learn the product and ask for help with specifics if needed. Remote starters and security is another animal and you can't get it done right without reading and comprehending installations guides, testing and verifying wires, taking interiors apart and reassembling them without destroying panels, and getting your wiring down to an art.

If you've got too much pride to admit you don't know something and to ask for help, nobody but you can fix that problem. The 12V technicians I look up to do not have inflated egos, and they will never claim they know everything.

People don't realize just how many skills you need to learn to be able to tackle all aspects of a well-rounded 12V build. There's no shame in admitting you can't handle something, because people spend thousands of dollars on tools, continuous training, experimenting with new materials and techniques, countless hours that don't immediately bring in money, etc.

We talk **** because the majority of shops are ****. Obviously not all though. As stated earlier, most shops just sell a product and aren't enthusiast level. The few shops I have personal experience with in Central and Eastern Kentucky are ****. Nothing but Kicker's lowend gear or JL's low end gear that cost's more than my truck. I will always do all of my work, minus box DESIGN and fiberglassing door panels (although I will get to that point one day). I'm very OCD about where wires go. Its not hard to look up in a manual or on the relay box what each relay goes to, so don't be giving us **** (not all of us anyways...). Now if I get to a point that I'm confused on, I'll admit it and ask help, though likely not from a local shop (at least around here). I gave up hope on the shops local to me when I went to the one in my hometown and had no idea what an Oscilloscope and that never use a DMM to set gains. Not to mention they knew little to nothing about how to run the 2k+ amps they sold. Thinking they can put a single run of undersized 0 gauge on 2500 watts with an 80 amp alt and a single small battery... Again, though, there are shops out there that are very, very knowledgeable and incredibly talented.

Well my next step will be getting a new car and then glassing up pods for 3 ways and i keep asking myself...Do i have the skill to start molding/fiberglassing into my doors/a pillars.
Its all a bit..intimidating.
there's a cheaper and less permanant way of doing 4 inch mids in a pillars. PVC endcaps and bolts

Ive seen that. i dont like how it looks. with the bolt sticking out. Plus i have a feeling that the enclosure made by the cap for the 4in mid may effect its ability to breathe and sound right.

Whatever car i get next is gonna my big project. Top to bottom. sound system, body, engine. everything. So i dont mind at all making things permanent.

One setup that did that sounded great at the SQ comp. Bolt is hidden its just use to latch on.
