Wiring from amp to sub

I have seen various posts about wire size from amp to sub, and it seems that between 8 to 12 guage should be ok. My question is why should I use such a large wire when my DVC JL 8W3 look like they only have 16 guage wire from the terminals to the coil?

wire is important. get high shielded wire and maybe get 10 gauge. this means that the current flowing will not be limited. that is the one thing you should be aware of is the current. that is why gauge is important. once I had my visonik v800xd amp hooked up with 8 gauge wire and that caused then power suply to burn out on the amp. I needed to hook it up with 4 or lower to supply the poroper current to the amp. wire is just as important as the component being hooked up. So think about this for a minite...............a amp does not have 4 gauge circiut lines going through it otherwise it would be huge.
